Another road trip, another rest/hike stop where we found a wonderful little trail that we had all to ourselves. With lots of new-to-me mosses and lichens. In Fine, New York.
Starting with red stemmed feather moss

$Red stemmed feather moss, or Pleurozium schreberi, forming a crescent shape of individual sprouts that each look like a fractal star of pale green. The form reminds me of the Fibonacci fractal of romanesco broccoli.$

Juniper haircap

Juniper haircap, or Polytrichum juniperinum. A sorry light green moss at the base, with taller dark green bits that pop up throughout. The tall parts look like very young stems of an evergreen tree.

Interrupted clubmoss

Interrupted clubmoss, or Spinulum annotinum, growing amongst fallen leaves on the forest floor. Tall thin strands growing upwards that look a bit like stems of a spruce tree. Could easily be mistaken for young sprouts of some kind of evergreen tree, rather than mosses.

Flat-branched tree clubmoss

Flat-branched tree clubmoss, or Dendrolycopodium obscurum. Another moss that looks a lot like a young evergreen tree just starting to grow. It has a long stem with little branches that fan out in full circles from the center.

Interrupted clubmoss

Interrupted clubmoss, or Spinulum annotinum. Several tall thin stems of light green, among fallen leaves on the forest floor. At the tips, they're more of a beige wheat color, and in fact look a bit like wheat seed heads. They are highlighted by gentle sunlight streaming down to the forest floor.

Broom forkmoss, which I've seen plenty of times before, but it never stops being beautiful
