A beautiful moss covered Western red #cedar #tree - still unprotected.
Only a human, with a compromised & unwell soul, would be OK killing an elder tree this magnificent. Some things are just plain wrong.

These ancient old growth trees are essential to fighting accelerated #ClimateChange. #OldGrowth ecosystems in our coastal temperate rainforests supports much biodiverse lifeforms. The naturally moist environment helps to lower impacts of wildfires & other natural disasters that have increased as our governments continue to fund & enable more ecocidal projects.

Low-angle, wide shot of a tree trunk positioned vertically. The bark is reddish-brown, deeply textured with vertical grooves, and heavily populated with green moss. The composition emphasizes the tree's height and scale, creating a sense of upward momentum. Framing trees surround the main subject, with a diffused, white sky in the background.

For Saint Patrick's day, and #mosstodon Monday, some greenery on the rocks from Beacon Rock, and more greenery on Wind Mountain. I recently read Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass, which was really interesting. I had no idea that moss reproduced with sperm, one of the first organisms on earth to do so! Also had no idea how dependent on very specific local conditions each moss is.
Steep, rocky, moss covered basalt cliff of Beacon Rock with some fog draped trees and partly cloudy skies.
Path winding up just below Beacon Rock's top. Moss covering the whole slope with firs soaring skyward.
Moss covered maple(?) trunks on a sword fern covered slope, on Wind Mountain.

I found some moss growing on the tree next to my house! Amazing...I've walked past this spot a zillion times but hadn't noticed all this time.

#mosstodon
A patch of moss nestled into the nook of a tree trunk.

Dipped briefly into news over lunch, decided to go on a mosshog hunt instead. Good call I think.

#sillyScribbles #mosstodon #nonsense
A photo of a small dollop of moss on a wooden surface. The wood is blurred in both the fore and background, with the focus on the moss, and the strip of wood in front and behind it. I have slightly stretched the muddy side of the moss into a snout shape, and drawn eyes, nose and mouth on so it sort of looks like a mossy hedgehog. A mosshog, if you will.

Hmm.... https://flipping.rocks might be good for the algae and lichen? Also they should follow the hashtags #LichenSubscribe and #Mosstodon 😀

If your friend wants any help using this place feel free to ask, and there's also lots of support for new people at https://fedi.tips

Some more moss pictures from today.

I'm starting to build an eye for it, looking out for mosses as I cycle the city. It's a bit like trying to find mushrooms in a forest. I do wish I could add the names of the mosses and lichens in the description though.

looking along a rope overgrown with moss along a tree, this macro shot looks like a lush green forest with plants growing over the rope like it's wooden tree trunks.
Blue-white and yellow, cup shaped lichen, crowing on a tree stem. Very close up, the photo covers maybe 1cm. It looks like a rough and alien landscape.
Close-up of a seedpod of a moss. A mosspit if you like.
Star moss looking like a massive succulent or aloe plant among even smaller moss as this crowing among the brick work on a bridge.

Haven't spent all afternoon trying to troll AI bots. Also found a new featherfolk in the garden.

A photo of a white fluffy feather lying on a moss covered stone wall. I have drawn eyes and some pointy teeth on it, but it looks silly rather than scary.

My favourite oaks near Sheepstor this week, I’m glad they survived the recent storms. #Dartmoor #Devon #mosstodon #photography
Mossy oaks bend over a footpath.

Marvellous microcosm of wall mosses

Mosses and lichens grow on a wall. The colours are brown-yellowish-orange. The spore capsules with red stems are yellow-green, it seems as if the heads are hanging down due to the moisture. The focus is on the mosses, the houses in the background are blurred.

#WaterfallWednesday #hiking #PNW #mosstodon
Skirting behind the middle falls at Little Mashel Falls, January last year.
A person in a brown/red rain gear and hiking poles walks around moss-covered boulders towards the back of waterfall crashing down white water into a rocky basin.

Almost forgot, I met this wonderful gnarly oak tree yesterday. Amazingly it had survived the storms - looks like it has survived a few!

#ThickTrunkTuesday #Mosstodon
Photo of an old and twisted oak tree on high moorland, the hills around brown with dead bracken. The branches are bare apart from a few brown and curled leaves that hang stubbornly on knobbly twigs. The stout, gnarly trunk is thickly upholstered in green moss. Ferns sprout from the sides. It looks very human-like. It made me happy to see it surviving on the wily windy moor. Many trees around felled by winter storms.
The ruins of a stone building lie behind, mossy stones being enveloped by bracken.

Another timeline cleanser for #Mosstodon, photographed last fall: Shingle Moss (Neckera pennata).

A feathery moss growing on the trunk of an old tree, its leaves reaching out horizontally. The depth of field is very shallow, creating a blurry green background with soft balls of colour in green, blueish, and orange.

Orange-cored Shadow lichen (Phaeophyscia rubropulchra) on a tree trunk

#lichensubscribe #Mosstodon #lichen #nature #closeup
The photo shows a rosette-shaped lichen with olive-green leaves (lobes) growing on a dark tree trunk.
The narrow, branched, long lobes are closely connected to the tree trunk and attached with short, black 'hairs' (rhizines) that are visible on the underside of the lobes.
Some of the lobe tips are broken off, and an orange-coloured core can be seen inside the lobes, which is an unusual inner colour for lichens!
In most cases, this inner part of the lobes, called the medulla, is white.
This lichen, the Orange-cored Shadow lichen (Phaeophyscia rubropulchra), is surrounded by a brown liverwort, some moss and some snow.

Wow, I have never felt so welcomed on any social network before! Thank you all :) I thought my first post would be seen by just about nobody. But no, nearly 600 favorites! I'm amazed!
Another one of my moss artworks: a small lighted sporophyte embroidery again. More (and other types of artworks) to follow!

A small wooden circle filled with moss themed embroidery, from which five sporophytes grow. They are tiny lights. The embroidery is placed on a tree trunk covered with moss.
