"In some corner of the sunless sea, passing through waters cold and dark enough to keep us at bay, there moves a beauty and a strangeness that rivals the unicorn."

from 'Narwhal', a chapter of 'The Golden Mole and Other Living Treasure', by Katherine Rundell

« The story of our relationship to the earth is written more truthfully on the land than on the page. It lasts there. The land remembers what we said and what we did. »

" ... there in the mist behind the sky

dolphins and porpoises leap
in rings around the island
birds call to the hours
there is music somewhere playing
silently ... "

Morning 👋🥰

"Earth may be alive, not as the ancients saw her - a sentient goddess with a purpose and foresight - but alive like a tree. A tree that quietly exists, never moving except to sway in the wind, yet endlessly conversing with the sunlight and the soil, using sunlight and water and nutrient minerals to grow and change, but all done so imperceptibly that to me the old oak tree on the green is the same as it was when I was a child."

~ James Lovelock

Birdfeeder Raider

Here is an eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) doing its best to maintain balance while eating at a bird feeder.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

You can check out my gallery at:

"The image shows a squirrel raiding a bird feeder. The squirrel is perched on top of the bird feeder, which is filled with seeds. It's gripping the metal hanger of the feeder with its front paws and appears to be eating or trying to access the seeds inside. The bird feeder is a cylindrical mesh container with a metal lid and base. The background is a white wall, and there is a watermark on the right side of the image that reads "© Swede's Photographs."

This image captures a common but amusing scenario where a squirrel, known for its agility and resourcefulness, is accessing food meant for birds. It highlights the adaptability and cleverness of squirrels in finding food sources." - Copilot

Sparrow and Blue Sky

This is a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) one of the species that I photograph the most.

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

swede1952-photographs.pixels.com

If you want a print of one of my photographs, you can get it there, If I haven't loaded it, let me know which one it is, and I'll gladly load it there for you.

"The image shows a sparrow perched on a tree branch. The bird has a light brown and white plumage with a distinctive reddish-brown streak on its head. The background is a clear blue sky, and the branches of the tree are visible around the bird. The bird appears to be calmly resting on the branch, and the photograph captures the details of its feathers and the texture of the tree bark. The image is interesting because it highlights the natural beauty of the bird and its surroundings, showcasing a moment of tranquility in nature. The photograph is signed with "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom right corner." - Copilot

Roadside flying duck north of Mallacoota, VIC. Still only finding the occasional scattered large duck orchid (Caleana major) in locations between Genoa & Mallacoota where there are usually larger colonies. Might just be a bit dry this spring to see a lot up and out.

Sharing a few favorites of mine before my December social media break.

I had a nice little photoshoot with this green anole at a local wetland area.

The green anole (scientific name: Anolis carolinensis) is a species of reptile found in areas of Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and the Carolinas. In fact, it’s the only kind of anole that is native to the United States.

"The image shows a close-up of a male house finch. The bird has a distinctive red coloration on its head and chest, with brown and white streaks on its wings and body. The background is a blurred green, making the bird stand out prominently. The finch's conical beak is closed, and its toes and talons are visible, spread wide above a black metal object on which the bird is about to land on. The details capture the texture of the bird's feathers and the intensity of its gaze. The photograph is signed "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom right corner." - Copilot with edits

Spent some time today finding Small Good Things. Can recommend, although I did get a little soggy.

A photo taken low down in my garden lawn. In the centre, the focus is on a single, delicate, water coated mushroom. The background is soft green, fading to dark near the top. Scattered around are blades of dark green grass with droplets of water on them. A small, simple, drawn figure sits underneath the mushroom, arm reached out to a blade of grass.

"As Earth’s temperature rises, agricultural practices will need to adapt. Droughts will likely become more frequent, and some land may no longer be arable."

"On top of that is the challenge of feeding an ever-growing population without expanding the production of fertilizer and other agrochemicals, which have a large carbon footprint that is contributing to the overall warming of the planet.

"Researchers across MIT are taking on these agricultural challenges from a variety of angles."

Politicians not ambitious enough to save nature, say scientists

Scientists say there has been an alarming lack of progress in saving nature as the UN #biodiversity summit, #COP16, draws to a close.

The scale of political ambition has not risen to the challenge of reducing the destruction of #nature that costs the economy billions, said one leading expert.

"When as the first beams of the sun break through, the river still lies sleeping, wrapped in dreams of mist, we no more see it than it sees itself."

from 'Jean Santeuil', by Marcel Proust

Found this perfect little nest on the ground when I was gardening today. It must have been blown out of a tree or shrub in the last storm. Made of sheep’s wool and moss. I don’t know which bird might have made it, but it’s very tidy so wren maybe.

Grass is pretty amazing.

I was out at the farm, doing the regular fall chores and prepping beds for garlic, when my glasses lens fell out. The screw is, of course, gone. But I need my glasses to drive. Enter a natural material that's abundant, strong, flexible and able to hold a knot.

It got me home. Thanks, grass.

"Between heather and marigold,
Between spaghnum and buttercup,
Between dandelion and broom,
Between forget-me-not and honeysuckle,

As between clear blue and cloud,
Between haystack and sunset sky,
Between oak tree and slated roof,
I had my existence. I was there.
Me in place and the place in me."

from 'A Herbal' by Seamus Heaney

"Mountain heaves and sighs, besoils a blue berry
in the palm
of a human hand millions of years in the future,
says I become you
and you
a mountain of matter.

Blueberry plant stretches its roots
smelling the soil for atoms,
hears faint hand outstretched pinching stems pulling berries:
says what do I eat and who do I stain?"
