Resurrecting another *NEW* portfolio: This is the Isle of Arran, Scotland 👉 https://www.iancylkowski.com/scottish-islands/isle-of-arran

We spent a week here way back in 2017, and a week is not enough. I yearn to be here again, with its imposing mountains, ancient history, gorgeous coast and so much.

A serene and ancient stone circle at Machrie Moor on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. Three tall standing stones dominate the foreground, their surfaces weathered and covered with patches of lichen and moss, indicating their age and exposure to the elements. The largest stone stands prominently on the right, its rugged texture and earthy tones contrasting with the surrounding landscape. The other two stones are slightly smaller and positioned further back, creating a sense of depth and alignment. The ground is a mix of grass and dry, golden-brown vegetation, suggesting an autumnal setting. In the background, rolling hills stretch across the horizon under a partly cloudy sky, with a faint rainbow arching gracefully above the scene. The overall atmosphere is one of tranquility and historical significance, evoking a sense of connection to the past amidst the natural beauty of the Scottish countryside.
A picturesque scene of a cascading stream in North Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. The water flows gently over rocks and small waterfalls, creating a smooth, silky texture that highlights its movement. Surrounding the stream are patches of grass and heather, displaying autumnal hues of yellow, orange, and green, adding warmth to the landscape. Large boulders are scattered along the banks, contributing to the rugged beauty of the area. In the background, imposing rocky hills rise up, their dark, jagged silhouettes contrasting with the softer tones of the foreground. The sky above is partly cloudy, with grey clouds hinting at an impending change in weather, while a sliver of light breaks through, casting a gentle glow over the scene. The overall atmosphere is one of serene wilderness, showcasing the raw natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
The majestic Glenashdale Falls on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. A powerful waterfall cascades down a steep rocky cliff, its water appearing smooth and silky due to the long exposure used in capturing the scene. The falls are surrounded by lush, dense vegetation, with trees and foliage displaying vibrant autumnal colours, including greens, yellows, oranges, and hints of red. The mist rising from the falling water adds a mystical quality to the atmosphere, enhancing the sense of movement and energy. The surrounding landscape is rich with ferns and moss-covered rocks, creating a verdant backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the white, frothy water of the falls. The overall scene exudes a sense of tranquility and natural beauty, highlighting the raw power and serenity of this stunning Scottish landmark.
A serene and picturesque scene at Glen Rosa on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. A small, flowing stream meanders through a rugged landscape, its water cascading gently over rocks to create miniature waterfalls. The foreground features a shallow pool with clear, reflective water that mirrors the surrounding environment, including the rocky terrain and patches of vibrant vegetation. Large boulders are scattered along the banks, adding texture and depth to the scene. The background reveals rolling hills and distant mountains, their peaks shrouded in soft mist under a partly cloudy sky. The landscape is adorned with autumnal hues, with grasses and shrubs displaying warm tones of yellow, orange, and brown, contrasting beautifully with the greenery and the cool blue-grey of the rocks. The overall atmosphere is one of peaceful wilderness, showcasing the natural beauty and tranquility of this Scottish glen.

Looking Out on the realm

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are highly territorial. This one perches atop a small pine tree, surveying the landscape below, likely on the lookout for prey.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"This image showcases the northern mockingbird perched gracefully atop a pine tree. Its grayish-brown feathers, contrasting with its pale underparts, are beautifully captured. Its signature long tail adds to its elegance, and the bird appears vigilant, gazing towards the right. The clear, serene sky in the background complements the natural setting, emphasizing the bird's distinctive features. The credit "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom corner adds a touch of professionalism to this striking nature shot. It truly embodies the beauty of wildlife photography!" - Copilot

"This strange, multicoloured and astonishing world which we explore - where space is granular, time does not exist and things are nowhere - is not something that estranges us from our true selves, for this is what our natural curiosity reveals to us about the place of our dwelling."

"The warmth has come.
The doors have opened. Flower and song
Embroider ground and air, lead me
Beside the healing field that waits;
Growth, death, and a restoring form
Of human use will make it well.
But I go on, beyond, higher
In the hill’s fold, forget the time
I come from and go to, recall
This grove left out of all account,
A place enclosed in song."

Have a great weekend everyone! Enjoy this pic of this beautiful tidal marsh that I saw on a walk near the ocean yesterday. This marsh is connected to the ocean (but not seen in this pic). I could hear the pounding of the surf from the ocean the entire walk! #ocean #hiking #CapeCod

Photo of marsh as viewed from edge. The water leads away from the camera toward the horizon where the ocean is (but the ocean is not seen). Tan and brown grasses line the edges of the water.

"Mid-river, two mute swans
dip-down, disappear, re-appear,

sun-dazzled and dripping light.
They fix each other with serious eyes,

form a heart of white necks,
knowing with fierce clarity

when to become unseen, when to seek
out the chamber of the moment,

its floating chandelier, its bright invisibility ... "

"Black as eels but halo-bright they circled, swimming
me into their carnival, into a wider world —
so that I want to say, do not fear your anguish;
despair births miracles; hope is only waiting for release.
Pay attention, the signs gifted are subtle: small beads
for the necklace of faith we must thread for ourselves."

Results of another good working party in the nature reserve. #Nature #Conservation
Entrance into a nature reserve from the allotments now has hazel fencing and hurdles down one side and relaid hedging down the other. Only a small stretch of posts and chain link fencing still remain but it’s gradually being replaced. The gate is opened wide shoeing a leaf litter strewn pathway and an information board in the distance.
A mound bank now cleared of brambles with various tree saplings of field maple, ash, elder, hawthorn and guilder rose are uncovered wearing their plastic protective sleeves. Various entrances to a badger sett are on the other side of this mound. The lack of leaf in the tree lined background shows it is still early spring.
A wood pile habitat built by volunteers for invertebrates and hedgehog housing. The pile has some fresh cut birch logs mixed with various branches of different shapes and sizes collected from the woodland floor.

Silvereye, Zosterops lateralis, a common small insectivore of the Canberra region. Common or not, they're still beautiful - and I've even had the privilege of holding one in my hand - when it flew into a window and was stunned. I held its immaculate little presence in my hand, protecting it from harm (and pets) until it recovered sufficiently to fly off. Wonderful.

Jobs for the weekend - 29/30 Mar

As well as catching up on a bunch of stuff from last weekend, i’ll be preparing tomato frames, mulching borders and planting summer flowering bulbs, building wildlife tunnels with the help of the neighbours and possibly feeding the lawns.

"A store of light, a shoal,
a smallness of sunlight-darkness,
pips, ghosts,
a slowness amongst the trees."

"Nothing of Earth shows
tonight but the tips of the forest
against a bright white moon
almost full, half risen.

When our forebears saw something like this
they must have wondered how light,
such light, could exist in such darkness.
As for us, we know. And our knowledge

tells how the sun whirls us round,
how the planet’s exploded side
was rounded off, like this globe
itself, by the rush of gravity.

We ourselves seem
to be moving. And we are, we are."

"An evening
starred with starlings...
Were that wordplay
it also brings out
truth,
so blackly twittering,
an unheard-of-ness
in the labyrinth.

It must
be Autumn: a furrowing
of the brow,
the birdcloud
rising
from fouled treetops

to take
northwards, an
incomprehensible direction."

"When the kingfisher flitted
Under the hazels I entered again into boyhood
Over a hurrying water.
The church clock dropped the quarters nearby
And from a little school
Children hallooed like enchanted animals
But I was watching a water that shipped the wild apples
With all the time in the world
Patient as a fisher bird
In the hazel light to learn to be a finder
Of life, its mark, on a black stone
Opened like a butterfly, a soul that water,
Swaling and swaling, had let be seen."

"Sometimes I am dizzy with the fear
of losing everything - the sea, the sky,
all living creatures, forests, estuaries:
we trade so much to know the virtual
we scarcely register the drift and tug
of other bodies
scarcely apprehend
the moment as it happens: shifts of light
and weather
and the quiet, local forms
of history ...

but this is the problem: how to be alive
in all this gazed-upon and cherished world
and do no harm ... "

Todays waddle was magic. It started slow and bit colder than expected, but then I spotted
My first bluethroat of the season. And this fellow was in a good singing mood, flying around. I sat down and waited, until he popped up in bush behind me singing. 😍

"Here you are, rushing in again at the last minute, settling where you will. From a distance I could confuse you with the others lining the road in bright yellow spring. But of course you are a delicate flower, no staid daffodil or trenchant dandelion. I can see as I get closer that you will always be young, your hat always blowing, half-covering your face now caught in laughter, your hand half up to hold it on."

"The owl wafts home with a mouse in its beak.
The moon is stunningly bright in the high sky.
Such a gold stone, such a brilliant hard light.
Such large round eyes of the owl among the trees.
All seems immortal but for the dangling mouse,
an old hurt string among the harmony
of the masterful and jewelled orchestra
which shows no waste soundlessly playing on."
