A beautiful calm misty morning, livened up somewhat by the mass of gulls, crows and ducks squawking, cawing and quacking at great volume.

#photography #Scotland #birds
A natural sepia tone photo taken on a misty morning as the sun rises over the river. There are silhouettes of 4 flying gulls prominent in the photo, with more floating on the rippling water alongside a couple of ducks. There is mist shrouding the trees and buildings in the distance.

Lastly, the floofiest, borbiest stonechat I ever did see!

#birds #borb
Photo of a European stonechat perched on a branch in a lichen-encrusted hawthorn tree. The stonechat has just been preening and its feathers are all floofed up - peachy-buff breast, dark cap and back, and clean white collar.

The #cranes are finally on the move! I counted about 625 sandhill cranes migrating past during a half-hour #bike ride around the neighborhood.

The close photo is from Bosque del Apache; the one of the flock is from my patio.

#BikeTooter #birds #NewMexico
A shot of the middle of a migrating flock of sandhill cranes. They're large grey birds with long necks that they keep stretched straight out in front while flying, long straight bills, and long broad wings. They're flying in no particular pattern, but close enough to each other that in some cases their wingtips appear to overlap.
A lone sandhill crane flying from right to left, its wings caught on a downstroke, long neck stretched out in front and long legs trailing behind. In the distance, visible under the crane, is an out-of-focus mountain.

A large flock of redwings just passed through the garden. I guess colder weather really is on the way.

Not a great photo from the window, but hopefully they’ll be back. We’ve plenty of apples to go round.

#birds
A photo taken in dimpsy light of a couple of redwings perched in the almost leafless upper branches of a beech tree. The light is poor so the birds and branches are little more than silhouettes against the grey sky. It’s too dark to make out their red underwing patches but the speckled breasts and white eye stripes show up.

"The martins weigh anchor across the sky
as if they're trying to catch down heaven -
and now it seems that heaven is upon us
like some vast and open canvas, love flung down
in the willows' shivering intervals, their bright
and pliant stems falling like green rain ... "

from 'Beatitude (Ah! Bright Wings!)', by Fiona Benson

Two housemartins on a willow branch, with a third flying overhead.

The collective noun for ducks is a swoosh #DailyVenice #Ducks #Birds
Colour photo, although you'd hardly know it because it is entirely in silvery greys and blacks, of seven ducks swimming on a rippled canal. They appear to be playing Follow My Leader, and have arranged themselves in a curvy Nike-style swoosh shape, black against the mercury-coloured water. Along the top of the frame is a narrow band of black reflections of a dome and the lines of some mooring posts.

I put up a new fat ball feeder the other day. I thought it might be a bit too close to the house (outside the kitchen window), but the little birds seem to like it while the woodpecker hogs the original feeder that’s further away. Anyway, after emptying that one, the woodpecker is clearly not bothered by our presence at all and is also not too keen to share!

#Birds
Photo taken through a window of a greater spotted woodpecker - black and white plumage rug a red rump and nape of neck - gripping onto the side of a metal feeder containing fat balls. It has a slightly open beak stuffed with suet. It is looking upwards at a blue tit that is clinging to the feeder hanging loop, hoping for a turn. A grey stone wall behind and a glimpse of trees and shrubs beyond on the right.

Sparrow and Blue Sky

This is a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) one of the species that I photograph the most.

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

swede1952-photographs.pixels.com

If you want a print of one of my photographs, you can get it there, If I haven't loaded it, let me know which one it is, and I'll gladly load it there for you.

"The image shows a sparrow perched on a tree branch. The bird has a light brown and white plumage with a distinctive reddish-brown streak on its head. The background is a clear blue sky, and the branches of the tree are visible around the bird. The bird appears to be calmly resting on the branch, and the photograph captures the details of its feathers and the texture of the tree bark. The image is interesting because it highlights the natural beauty of the bird and its surroundings, showcasing a moment of tranquility in nature. "The image shows a close-up of a male house finch. The bird has a distinctive red coloration on its head and chest, with brown and white streaks on its wings and body. The background is a blurred green, making the bird stand out prominently. The finch's conical beak is closed, and its toes and talons are visible, spread wide above a black metal object on which the bird is about to land on. The details capture the texture of the bird's feathers and the intensity of its gaze. The photograph is signed "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom right corner." - Copilot with edits

Found this perfect little nest on the ground when I was gardening today. It must have been blown out of a tree or shrub in the last storm. Made of sheep’s wool and moss. I don’t know which bird might have made it, but it’s very tidy so wren maybe.

#birds #nature
Photo of a white hand holding a little cup-shaped nest made from white sheep’s wool threaded with green moss and grass.
An acer with leaves turning from green to orange is slightly out-of-focus in the background beside a leaf-scattered lawn.

Every chewed leaf is proof that our gardens are part of a living web.

Yet beneficial insects that naturally prey on aphids, mites, etc. can help keep pest populations in check. Flowering plants such as yarrow, dill, and fennel, create an inviting habitat for garden allies like ladybugs, lacewings and hoverflies.

A biodiverse garden isn’t just good for pest control; it also supports pollination and soil health. Native plants support a diversity of beneficial insects.

They also provide food and habitat for local wildlife, birds, and pollinators, encouraging a garden that’s healthier, more resilient, and truly in harmony with nature.

Wrote a blog post about my most recent research adventure, trying to track down animal species mentioned in a folktale. It was a wild ride, and I learned a lot about why it is woth doing your homework on animal tales.

Today's folklore research WTF:

The Russian tale "Prince Ivan, the Firebird, and the Grey Wolf" has been translated to English in the 19th century by Edith Hodgetts as

"The Grey Wolf and the Golden Cassowary"

And now I can't not imagine the prince trying to wrangle

A damn FLYING CASSOWARY

(This is why you double check translations, people)

😬 😆

Well, that's great. I knew that years ago when I watched a Shrike catch a sparrow. Very shocking. A shrike catches prey and then impales it for later treats. #ShrikeTheImpaler

Some days you just need to say "f*ck it" and take your falcon grocery shopping.

I made a rainbow of (some of the many) birds that have documented same sex pairs and behavior.

Scarlet ibis
Guianan cock-of-the-rock (yes really)
Peach-faced lovebird
White fronted amazon
Satin bowerbird
Pukeko

Photos of the colorful birds listed above, making a rainbimow scale. Scarlet ibis is bright red with a long curved beak and long pink legs. The cock-of-the-rock is bright orange with a domed crest over its beak. The lovebird is yellow with a pink face. The amazon is green with a red circle around its eye. The bowerbird is shiny deep blue. And the pukeko is a bluish purple color with a red beak.

Saw this stork today, sizing up an ice cream truck outside the stork sanctuary. Wonder what they were in the mood for. 😄

The Hungarian Ornithology Society has these collectible pins they sell for donations at various locations around Hungary. There are more than 300 species included, but the catch is, they don't tell you which pins you can find at which locations.

Today I went on a scavenger hunt and managed to find a care at the fourth try 😄 Yay!

Some birds on 11.29 at Loft's Pond, one of south shore Nassau County's multitude of small fresh- and brackish-water ponds originally part of a broad coastal marshland, but now embedded in suburbia. These are important-- although insufficient by themselves -- habitats for many species of fauna, way-stations for migrating birds and winter residences for waterfowl. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was a particularly accommodating subject, landing in a bush close by and, later, on a tree right over my head. The Green-winged Teals, foraging in the pond, were also relatively tranquil subjects, for a change. I chose not to crop so as not to lose perspective of our current engagement with their habitat. The other species shown are a White-throated Sparrow and, yes, a Red-BELLIED Woodpecker 😜 .
#nature #NaturePhotography #birds #Wildlife #naturecommunity #photography #BirdsOfMastodon #birdphotography #birding
"Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are fairly small woodpeckers with stout, straight bills. The long wings extend about halfway to the tip of the stiff, pointed tail at rest. Often, sapsuckers hold their crown feathers up to form a peak at the back of the head. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are mostly black and white with boldly patterned faces. Both sexes have red foreheads, and males also have red throats [this one is a female]. Look for a long white stripe along the folded wing. Bold black-and-white stripes curve from the face toward a black chest shield and white or yellowish underparts."(AllAboutBirds)
"A pair of Green-winged Teals in a pond containing some plastic and other waste. "Green-winged Teal are very small ducks. They have short, blocky bodies and their tails sit high out of the water. The head is large, the neck is short, and the bill is relatively small. Adult males have grayish bodies with a narrow white vertical stripe extending from the waterline to the shoulder. In good light, their dark heads are cinnamon with a wide green swoop from the eye to the back of the neck. Females are brown with a yellowish streak along the tail. Both sexes have green wing patches in the secondaries (speculum), but these may be hidden when not in flight." (AllAboutBirds).
"White-throated Sparrows are brown above and gray below with a striking head pattern. The black-and-white-striped head is augmented by a bright white throat and yellow between the eye and the bill, which is gray. You’ll also see a less boldly marked form, known as “tan-striped,” with a buff-on-brown face pattern instead of white-on-black." (AllAboutBirds)
The Red-bellied Woodpecker "often appears pale overall, even the boldly black-and-white striped back, with flashing red cap and nape. Look for white patches near the wingtips as this bird flies." (AllAboutBirds). And, oh, yes, the belly does have a red wash.

Australia would be one place where that doesn't apply. Most of ours are flying around. Even in suburbia they're eating the fruit from our trees and making a heck of a racket at sunset.

Here's a sulphur crested cockatoo eating loquats in my tree. Possibly the loudest birds on earth.

It took a while before I saw a bee-eater living up to its name

Here's a couple of Rainbow Bee-eaters hunting from a tall branch. In one shot it appears a carpenter bee is meeting its end, but most of the prey being grabbed from the sky while we watched were dragonflies

Rainbow Dragonfly-eater is a bit clumsy to say though, I see that. Rainbow Dragonslayer perhaps?
