Looking Out on the realm

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are highly territorial. This one perches atop a small pine tree, surveying the landscape below, likely on the lookout for prey.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"This image showcases the northern mockingbird perched gracefully atop a pine tree. Its grayish-brown feathers, contrasting with its pale underparts, are beautifully captured. Its signature long tail adds to its elegance, and the bird appears vigilant, gazing towards the right. The clear, serene sky in the background complements the natural setting, emphasizing the bird's distinctive features. The credit "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom corner adds a touch of professionalism to this striking nature shot. It truly embodies the beauty of wildlife photography!" - Copilot

Good morning. 🍁🍁🍁

21 March 2025

Are you ever in a bad mood for now reason at all? I think it happens to all of us. When it happens to me, I usually just get quiet and mope around, but when I'm like that is not a good time to accidently bump into me.

My mother made me a Dammit Doll—a simple creation crafted from a couple of pieces of cloth, stuffed and sewn together, with buttons for eyes, yarn for hair, and a ribbon with a bell attached. A 3x5 card is tied to the ribbon, featuring these words:

"When you feel you want to throw the phone or kick the desk and shout. Here's a little dammit doll you cannot do without. Just grab it by its legs and find a place to slam it. And as you whack the stuffing out. Yell dammit, dammit, dammit."

"When angry, count to four; when very angry, swear." - Mark Twain

Three Purple Stars

The image showcases three stunning, star-shaped sweetgum leaves with a vibrant purple color. These leaves have a glossy texture with clearly defined veins, creating a striking contrast against the softly blurred background of green and brown tones. The lighting draws attention to their rich hues and intricate details, making them the focus of the composition.

Not all my prints are rubbish.

(please, be kind, it's Monday and I'm tired)

Lotus Garden

This used to be the best Chinese takeaway in Penrith, Cumbria. I haven't been for a long time so can't vouch for it now. The entrance is around the corner but when I took the picture this was a better shot.

I Told You We Should Have Left Earlier

This pair of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) appear to be interacting. It seems all the spots at the bird feeder might be taken.

Feathered Sunshine

This charming male American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) made a visit to my backyard this morning, joining a lively group of others

"When Brown-headed Cowbirds lay eggs in an American Goldfinch nest, the cowbird egg may hatch but the nestling seldom survives longer than three days. The cowbird chick simply can’t survive on the all-seed diet that goldfinches feed their young." - allaboutbirds.org

On A Winters Walk

When the cold bites hard, and you've a long way to go, the footpath is never ending, and your spirits are low.
Don't change your way or take a different road.

Chapman's Stardust

Tucked away on the High Street in Swansea is this intriguing building. Opened by Samuel Palmer Chapman as a photographic store and studio in the 1860's which he run with his son Henry Alfred Chapman.
Henry was as talented in front of an easel as he was behind the lens...

Through To The Enchanted Forest

Sometimes you just don't want to go there. Realism suffocates adventure. But that view, down an innocuous alley from a busy street, where does it really lead? When does the stone of modernity beneath our feet become the beaten earth of ancient pilgrimage?

Kirkland

Kirkland township, a region of Kendal, Cumbria, from the south of the Blindbeck stream. This was an independent settlement 'church land' which had its own manor court and was not officially absorbed into the borough of Kendal until 1908.

The smaller wooden door to the right is opened at 4:00pm every weekend to allow dog owners to 'chase the bishop'. A tradition beginning in the 16th century in which locals with hounds would pursue members of the clergy round and round the gate entrance.

Birdfeeder Raider

Here is an eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) doing its best to maintain balance while eating at a bird feeder.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

You can check out my gallery at:

"The image shows a squirrel raiding a bird feeder. The squirrel is perched on top of the bird feeder, which is filled with seeds. It's gripping the metal hanger of the feeder with its front paws and appears to be eating or trying to access the seeds inside. The bird feeder is a cylindrical mesh container with a metal lid and base. The background is a white wall, and there is a watermark on the right side of the image that reads "© Swede's Photographs."

This image captures a common but amusing scenario where a squirrel, known for its agility and resourcefulness, is accessing food meant for birds. It highlights the adaptability and cleverness of squirrels in finding food sources." - Copilot

Sparrow and Blue Sky

This is a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) one of the species that I photograph the most.

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

swede1952-photographs.pixels.com

If you want a print of one of my photographs, you can get it there, If I haven't loaded it, let me know which one it is, and I'll gladly load it there for you.

Good morning. 😴⏰☕

9 July 2024

A few weeks ago, I received a reply on Mastodon from a guy who was upset because I updated a post that I made months ago. It seemed to bother him greatly that I corrected a spelling error on an old post. When I notice errors, I do take the time to correct them, and I use old content. I explained what I was doing to the guy, and it seemed to bother him even more because he felt the need to try and insult me online, so I blocked him. But I wonder, I won, won, wonder, why it bothered him so much 🎶.

Hmmm ... Charlie is bugging me and Ben is barking, it must be close to mealtime.

"The image depicts a serene scene: a body of still water reflecting lush green grass and plants along its edge. The reflection creates a symmetrical effect, with the real grass above and its mirror image below, divided by the waterline. A watermark or signature on the right-side reads “© Swede's Photographs” indicating copyright ownership." - Copilot

Blue Jay

Here is a photo of a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) that I took in October 2023. I haven't seen any of these birds in a few weeks, I know that they are still around though. Perhaps they are deeper in the forest. My guess I'll see them more when it starts getting really cold, especially it snows. Yes, it occasionally snows in Louisiana.

"The oldest known wild, banded Blue Jay was at least 26 years, 11 months old when it was found dead after being caught in fishing gear. It had been banded in the Newfoundland/Labrador/St. Pierre et Miquelon area in 1989 and was found there in 2016." - allaboutbirds.org

This blue jay perches on a black metal shepherd's hook with its back facing the camera. The bird has its head turned towards the camera obviously aware that I'm there. Its black beak has the shape of a pointed wedge. There is a black mark at the base of the beak shaped like a wide letter "H." The crest on top of its head is flattened and blue, but its face is white with black markings. Its back and wings are blue, and the flight feathers are elaborately decorated with checkers of blue, white, and black. Its tail feathers are blue with horizontal black stripes at mostly even intervals, its breast is white, and its legs and feet are gray.

"Large, crested songbird with broad, rounded tail. Blue Jays are smaller than crows, larger than robins. White or light gray underneath, various shades of blue, black, and white above." - allaboutbirds.org
