Singular in a plural world, my thoughts bed down. Then there are the apples in a weather turned mild, apples on stalls, between shade on the grass and sun crossing noiseless trees in ripples. We celebrate each thing that grows but mainly apples. Peeled, baked, picked and fallen, leaves on stems, apples all in a day, that glowed with light, survived the summer storms. There is happiness that comes of this, there is a calm in the year turning late that I feel in the touch of these apples. And old customs of which brown, bearded men tell us, we will mean to observe but will forget as nights chill and we gaze down the long silences. We will return to other apple days, we will find the gate to old fields and whistle a tune that brings good memories, sets free all things necessary for single minds in a plural world. We will look on starry midnights and will remember the apples in their baskets, their trays, and stretch to hold cider jugs as firelight dapples solidity away.

I doubt we could say now tht the water thunders down, but rather, beginning at some spot of rockrose, moss and bracken, it *believes*, cannot do other than turn towards its larger cause and, from scintillate wit and flaunt around the dark roll of rock, come to serve the steadier life, bringing the over and above back down to where they have meaning for us - cloud and mountain mood made equable in the same calm mirror - until we lose ourselves again in the lift and fall of the water, its let-be and lintel of light.

Results of another good working party in the nature reserve. #Nature #Conservation
Entrance into a nature reserve from the allotments now has hazel fencing and hurdles down one side and relaid hedging down the other. Only a small stretch of posts and chain link fencing still remain but it’s gradually being replaced. The gate is opened wide shoeing a leaf litter strewn pathway and an information board in the distance.
A mound bank now cleared of brambles with various tree saplings of field maple, ash, elder, hawthorn and guilder rose are uncovered wearing their plastic protective sleeves. Various entrances to a badger sett are on the other side of this mound. The lack of leaf in the tree lined background shows it is still early spring.
A wood pile habitat built by volunteers for invertebrates and hedgehog housing. The pile has some fresh cut birch logs mixed with various branches of different shapes and sizes collected from the woodland floor.

Silvereye, Zosterops lateralis, a common small insectivore of the Canberra region. Common or not, they're still beautiful - and I've even had the privilege of holding one in my hand - when it flew into a window and was stunned. I held its immaculate little presence in my hand, protecting it from harm (and pets) until it recovered sufficiently to fly off. Wonderful.

And finding some forgotten lupins I'd sown from seed last autumn holding in their fingers a raindrop each like a peace offering, or a promise, I am suddenly grateful and would offer a prayer if I believed in God. But not believing, I bless the power of seed, its casual, useful persistence, and bless the power of sun, its conspiracy with the underground, and thank my stars the winter's ended.

These summer mornings I get up at five, biro in hand, surprised to be still alive, grateful for all the clichés and beguiled by the first birdsong, the first light, the wild relationship of water and cloud kingdoms shaping our wishes and our waking dreams. It's late, so lights out even as a last glow still lingers on the gardens, on roof and rock: mid-June now and it's never completely dark but vague, ambrosial, metamorphic, slow as if some happy mischief is at work in the mist-pearly undergrowth below, transfiguring the earth from dusk to dawn. The moon floats from a cloud and two dogs bark; the anthropomorphic trees are trees again, the human forms recover their wood-grain and the prehensile skins of hand and groin revert, the limbs to branches, hair to leaves as they resume their old arboreal lives. The girls are fast asleep in the rooms above. Back here from dreamland with a dewy leaf to keep me right and ward off disbelief, I await the daylight we were born to love: birds at a window, boats on a rising wave, light dancing on dawn water, the lives we live.
