Just popping in with a quick "hello", as I have visitors this week so am mainly offline being hostess and tour guide. Had a quick wander at the Ben Lawers Nature Reserve yesterday, home to the Best Rocky Stream and friendliest clouds.

#sillyScribbles #cloudCreatures #Scotland
A photo of a beautiful mountainside with a small rocky stream running down it. There are large lichen covered boulders, patches of still dark brown heather, mossy grass and bare, just budding trees. In the distance is a mountain peak, with a blue sky above. There is one cloud poking up from behind the mountain. It has a smiling face and upturned arms, greeting you to this lovely place.

One of the finest views in #Scotland sits amidst the towering #mountains of Torridon. The summit itself is a flat shelf with steep drops to the south, providing an uninterrupted vista of the expansive glen beyond. The mountain itself is not on many people's lists; not surprising given it's dramatic neighbours. But, as a photographer, it is often these lower peaks that offer the best opportunities for images!

The superbly located fishing and ferry port of Ullapool in Wester Ross, gateway to the amazing far north-west of Scotland and terminus for the ferry service to Stornoway on Lewis in the Western Isles. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ullapool/ullapool/index.html

Ullapool in Wester Ross. The image shows a telephoto view of the harbour area of Ullapool, with moored fishing boats. There are smaller boats moored to buoys in the foreground, while in the background the white buildings of Ullapool give way to a loch, on the far side of which the land climbs out of the frame.

Looking out across a misty Loch Lomond from Rowerdennan yesterday afternoon. This is another of the wonderful locations you can reach within an hour of Glasgow, unless you're walking the West Highland Way. If you are, it'll probably take you a couple of days or so to get here. The view's well worth the effort, though.

One of the things I love about Glasgow is that within a hour you can be in a surprisingly wide variety of very different landscapes ranging from rugged mountains to sandy beaches, such as this one at Irvine.

Culross in Fife, on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. The village has been beautifully restored over many years and is the nearest thing to a 16th century time capsule that Scotland has to offer. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/culross/culross/index.html

Culross in Fife. The image shows a lane leading between very old buildings towards a white three-storey building in the distance. The buildings on the left are coated in a yellow harling, while those on the right are finished in natural stone and white. The roofs are mainly red pantiles. There are open stone stairways leading up to the first floor on both sides of the lane. There are signs of snow on the ground and the sky is blue.

Businesses back SNP for growth

Colour me amazed. The Times reports something vaguely positive about the Scottish government. Although I suspect this was simply necessary to critique #Starmer, #Sarwar and #Labour.

Having said that, businesses that favour ‘Reform’ as a party for growth are either deluded or taking the piss. So the survey is probably useless.

Meantime this has driven the haters mad in the comments.

Screen capture from article, reads
‘The survey also revealed a stark difference in perception between the Scottish and UK governments. Nearly half (48 per cent) of respondents believe the Scottish government is concerned with the needs of businesses in Scotland, compared with just 33 per cent who feel the same about the UK government.
Scott Edgar, the senior research manager at The Diffley Partnership, said: “These results show that the SNP is seen as the party best placed to support business growth and investment in Scotland, albeit by a small margin. The drop in support for Scottish Labour suggests business has grown more cautious about their approach over the last 12 months.”’

Bass

The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of #Scotland. Approximately 2 km (1 mi) offshore, and 5 km (3 mi) north-east of North Berwick, it is a steep-sided volcanic plug, 107 m (351 ft) at its highest point, and is home to a huge colony of gannets.

At high zoom, the true density of the bird colony is obvious.

A colour photo of one side of a steep-sided island, with a clear cyan sky overhead and a calm blue sea. The more horizontal ledges of the island are painted white by guano and the overflow has almost completely covered the vertical faces. At 100% magnification, individual birds can be seen, covering every available nesting ledge of which there are many. Beyond the island, on the left, the air is full of birds arriving and departing.

I stumbled across a small wildfire in Blackridge, W Lothian, just as firefighters were showing up.🧯🙏🏻

Scottish Fire & Rescue issued an "extreme wildfire warning". Climate change is making these destructive fires even more dangerous 🛑

Seriously considering starting a journalism outlet to compete with The Courier in Eastern Scotland so I can have news without transphobia. Probably lefty, green, and pro Indy too. Not everyone will like it, but wondering if there is enough.

Anyone interested or have any tips or warnings?

Former Scottish Labour MSP quits with furious attack on Keir Starmer

So one ‘Scottish’ MSP, just one has the balls to do something. How About the rest of you feart weans? Of course I will not expect a word from the mass of the London appointed cattle who will do what Starmer wishes.

The morning walk coincided with bullfinch breakfast time again. A more dignified nibbling of hawthorn buds today.

A bullfinsh, with black head and wings, grey back and bright rosy-orange front stands in profile on a thin branch, leaning down to breakfast. There are two or three white hawthorn flowers out, the rest of that branch, and the many surrounding ones, are bare. You can see more blurred branches and blue sky beyond.

The islands putting the brakes on the rural exodus of Scottish youth

A great article (for people outside the islands who may be unaware of the challenges) on the issues and maybe some of the opportunities.

There is something a bit weird going on. Been sorting through my photos from the last week & LOADS of clouds are forming with open mouths. This is not normal. You'd get one every now and then but honestly, they're EVERYWHERE.

I, of course, welcome our new Chompy Cloud Overlords but still... it's a bit odd. There is, I suppose, a slight chance that I have just spent too long looking at clouds.

It's a mystery 🧐

#sillyScribbles #cloudCreatures #Scotland
Photo of a blue sky with a few fluffy white clouds, one big solid one near the centre and other more wispy ones above and to the left. Some large bare tree tops cut across the bottom left corner of the frame. The main cloud has a v-shape cut out to which I have added large flat teeth so it forms a chompy jaw. I have also added eyes above, and arms.

Here's something a little different.

It wasn't always gorgeous weather during our stay around the East Neuk of Fife. When it was more gloomy, we headed to Dundee to check the city out.

In particular, the V&A Dundee Museum of Design proved a totally fascinating subject https://www.iancylkowski.com/blog/2025/3/13/the-va-design-museum-dundee-scotland-winter

The interior of the V&A Dundee, showcasing a modern architectural design. The space features a striking wooden wall with layered panels, creating a dynamic visual effect. The floor is made of dark tiles, and there are large glass windows allowing natural light to flood the area. In the centre, a staircase leads to an upper level adorned with wooden seating and displays. People are seen walking through the space, engaging with the environment, while a reception area is visible on the right. The ceiling is lined with horizontal wooden beams, enhancing the contemporary feel of the venue.
Another stunning interior view of the V&A Dundee, focusing on the flowing wooden wall that elegantly curves upward. The scene is viewed from a staircase leading down to the lower level, where visitors can be seen walking. Above, large windows allow ample natural light to brighten the space, and glimpses of the upper level reveal a bustling area with people seated and enjoying their surroundings. The staircase features glass railings and dark tiled steps, while the lower level showcases various exhibits and displays, including signage for "Locke Hall." The overall design combines modern architecture with warm wooden elements, creating an inviting atmosphere.
The striking exterior of the V&A Dundee, emphasising its unique architectural design. The building features a series of layered concrete panels that create a dramatic, angular façade, resembling the hull of a ship. In the foreground, a smooth, reflective surface of water mirrors the structure, enhancing its visual impact. The ground is wet, from recent rain, adding a subdued atmosphere under a cloudy sky. There are a few figures in the scene, providing a sense of scale against the impressive backdrop of the museum. The overall composition highlights both the contemporary design of the building and its harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment.
A captivating view from within the V&A Dundee, looking out towards the city of Dundee. The foreground features the building's distinctive layered concrete structure, creating a dynamic framing effect around the view. Beyond the architectural elements, the scene reveals a bustling urban environment, with various buildings and pedestrians visible in the distance. The surface beneath is smooth and wet, reflecting the cloudy sky overhead. To the right, a gently curving water feature adds a serene touch to the setting, while the overall composition highlights the contrast between the museum's modern design and the lively cityscape beyond.

Went out for a walk. Found buds and birds, so that was nice.

#photography #birds #Scotland
A photo of a blue tit in a tree top with a bright blue sky beyond. The tree branches are intertwined, some in focus, some blurred, and there are buds on them ready to burst into life. Centre stage is a delicate bird with a bright blue cap, white face, black stripes across the eyes, and bright yellow breast with a black stripe down it.

You know how the wee window you type in asks "What's on your mind?" before you've written anything?

Sometimes, when I've posted the picture and it's just sitting there with that question above, I just think "well, not very much, obviously".

Anyhow, apropos of nothing in particular, have another cloud.

#sillyScribbles #cloudCreatures #Scotland
A photo of a mountain top, trees, and a big blue sky with one rather smooth but wibbly white cloud in the centre. The cloud looks like a number of fairly smooth clouds stacked together, and there is a V shaped gap in the middle which I have predictably added teeth to, then eyes above. It's looking very excited about the big, leafless tree on the right hand side.

I love the elegant curve of this streetlamp standing against the stark, modernistic and very, very red frontage of a Glasgow University building in the West End. The classical and modern designs work beautifully together.

Portrait-format colour image shows an elegant, black iron streetlamp which curves at the top and has smaller curves within its design, standing out against the layered, red panelled exterior of a Glasgow University building, which itself curves away into the distance.

"Golden Drapery", Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest (2024).

A crown of floating pines. This is a common occurrence on Scottish lochs and tells a deeper story of the #landscape. Deer can't access these islands and so isolated patches of ancient woodland remain unscathed — if we look across the shore, we see the barren backdrop beyond. I loved the way these backlit #autumn birch leaves framed the scene, giving a sense of time and place.
