Surgical abortions at Queanbeyan Hospital to be reinstated and region's service expanded
Two new clinics providing abortion services are set to be established in Queanbeyan and NSW's south coast. It comes after an ABC investigation exposed that Queanbeyan Hospital had ceased providing surgical terminations.Lucy Barbour (ABC News)
For those who have retired already, there is little (other than benefits) that can be done, for women still in work, any reduction in the gap will have some positive impact on pensions!

How the gender pay gap evolves into a gender pension gap
Decades of lower pay and part-time work can leave women’s pensions worth a fraction of men’s at retirement. The Conversation

Boycott men? South Korea's 4B movement gains traction in the U.S. after Trump's win
After Trump's win, there are growing calls among American women to boycott men. They're drawing inspiration from 4B, a South Korean feminist movement that rejects dating, sex, marriage and childbirth.NPR
Often the Q. is focussed on women, but as we know men are also involved in parenthood (in the majority of cases), so what weight should we accord to their contribution to declining brith rates across the world?
Perhaps more than we have in the past?

As it happens I just finished reading the Bengali epic of Manasa, the Snake Goddess. She is an accidental daughter of Shiva. She spends the entire epic trying to gain recognition among the gods, and then among mortals.
She is supported all the way by her sister Neta, who is the perfect balance of intelligence and calculation to Manasa's flares of fury and power. They made a great duo 🐍

- Catakantaravanan: a Tamil epic that elaborates on the Ramayana, but in this story, it is Sita who fights a demon king
- Matabagka Seeks the Deity of the Wind: epic from the Philippines about a girl's heroic journey (this one has an English translation, but only in a thesis manuscript in the UP library)

Who do we talk to about getting a fuller translation?...

"Elizabeth Báthory is one of the most prolific serial killers in history!"
No 👏 She 👏 Is 👏 Not 👏
It was a political trial. She was a widow with vast lands and lots of money. There is an entire book written by a legal historian about her trial and how it was constructed to grab her wealth.
She was definitely not a vampire, but she was also not a celebrity murderess.

#WomensEpics I have read so far:
Shirin Mama (Sibe people) - warrior girl defeats bandits and rescues orphaned children, becoming a goddess
Chandravati's Ramayana (Bengal) - 16th century retelling from Sita's perspective
Ochi-Bala (Altai people) - warrior maiden fights an evil sorcerer to protect her people
I'm currently reading The Tale of Princess Fatima - an Arabic epic about a warrior woman

The search for Omm Sety (Jonathan Cott)
The fascinating biography of a woman who was declared dead at age 3, and came back to life remembering her previous life in Ancient Egypt. She dedicated her entire life to studying Egypt, moved there, helped archaeologists, and remembered a lot of things that later were discovered to be true...

The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II - by Svetlana Alexievich
Alexievich is a Nobel Laureate mostly known for "Voices from Chernobyl", but her other books are great too. In this one she interviewed hundreds of women who fought in WWII in the Soviet army, or as partisans.
This one a difficult read, with a lot of dark stories. But it is very much worth reading.

I just decided that I'll do another reading challenge - reading 26 epics about women.
And yes, I already have a list. 26 traditional epics with female protagonists from around the world.
Hopefully a year will be enough to read all of them 😄

I once again made a compilation of folktales for the occasion.
This time, it's tales where women save themselves. Because they DO EXIST. 😉 (*cough* #Damsel *cough*)

Queens of Animation: The untold story of the women who transformed the world of Disney and made cinematic history, by Nathalia Holt
This one was a fascinating read about the first woman animators and story artists hired by Walt Disney, and their lasting effect on the most famous Disney movies.
Most of it was new to me, and I loved the details about their lives and personalities.
