Queen #BUMBLEBEES - HELP THEM OUT!
Another Saturday morning means another vital thread concerning #bumblebee queens at this time of year!
Please #repost/#share as EVERY QUEEN BEE THAT SURVIVES GETS TO ESTABLISH A NEST that otherwise would not happen. Let me explain.

"A store of light, a shoal,
a smallness of sunlight-darkness,
pips, ghosts,
a slowness amongst the trees."

'Bees' by Richard Lambert

Overexposed image of a meadow full of yellow flowers, with a single bee stopping for her tea on the head of one bloom.

Bees move so fast I have to take dozens of pics just to get one clear shot. I managed to take one mid-flight that reminds me of that cat meme.

What do you think?

A carpenter bee is hovering near budding pink and green flowers on a bush. The plant appears to be in early bloom, with small clusters of blossoms and new leaves visible.
A fluffy, light-colored cat appears to be floating or flying in mid-air, with a serious expression, against a blurred background of greenery.

#SmilingHillFarm in the news -- for safely relocating #bees!

Hive with more than 40,000 bees removed from house at Smiling Hill Farm

by Russ Reed
September 19, 2024

WESTBROOK, Maine — "The family that owns Smiling Hill Farm is doing its best to protect a #BeeColony that has occupied a farmhouse for decades.

"The Knight family said a hive with more than 40,000 bees grew within the walls of a home on their property.

"The farmhouse is in need of renovation but instead of killing the bees, the Knight family wanted to save the colony.

"'For sixty-plus years, there's been bees in this house and it might be longer than that. It might be seventy or eighty,' said Michael Knight.

"On Thursday, Andrew MacDonald of Bee Huggah came to Smiling Hill Farm to safely relocate the bees from the farmhouse.

"'I believe that these bees are worth saving for a number of different reasons,' MacDonald said. 'They have medicinal value and they pollinate our crops.'

"MacDonald moved the bees to a hive outside of the farmhouse."

Today's Good News!

Slovenia is home to the highest per capita number of beekeepers in Europe. Out of a population of 2 million, 11,000 keep bees.

This small Eastern European country leads the EU in good pollinator policy, conducting research through the vast beekeeping network, creating legislation or best practices, and watching them spread from country to country like a bumblebee flitting between flowers.

Hello fellow fediverse denziens. I just deleted my #Facebook account and moved here. I didn't use #Twitter or #Instagram, so if I do weird things here that's probably why. I will, for example, use full sentences and the Oxford comma.

I live in #Portland, #Oregon with my wife and cat. I am currently trying to escape the corporate world, where I work as an #infosec professional. I am an #OSU Apprentice #Beekeeper and have two hives of #bees. And they're still alive!

#introduction

Time to warm up the super I took off several months ago and spin out the honey #bees

I discovered a few days ago that sardine bones can attract bees, even if you bury it in a pot. Needless to say seeing bees swarm around my balcony was enough for me to end my composting experiment 😆

I really did not want to attract another swarm to build a nest next to my living room.

Have anyone encountered the same phenomenon?

Please leave the leaves. And make a vow: no more leaf blowers!

Cutaway drawing of a bumblebee queen hibernating inside a leaf-covered nest in the corner of a yard beneath the snow.
Text says:
MOST BUMBLEBEE QUEENS NEST JUST BELOW THE GROUND OR UNDER PILES OF BRUSH IN WINTER.
LEAVE THE LEAVES. BAN THE LEAF BLOWER. IN THE SPRING, AVOID RAKING, TILLING AND MOWING UNTIL THE QUEENS EMERGE FROM THEIR WINTER NESTS IN MAY.

Basic bee facts every day at 3pm.

Research found that below 15°C bees seemed demotivated to fly - often not flying beyond 100m. Only larger sized #bees flew at these low temperatures suggesting smaller #bumblebees struggle in colder conditions.

#Bayer’s #pesticides are harming #bees

The use of #neonicotinoid pesticides, like those produced by Bayer, has helped make much of America’s landscape toxic to bees.

By Steve Blackledge
December 9, 2022

"#Pollinators are struggling — in large part because pesticides have made much of their environment toxic.

"Over the past quarter century, the increased use of a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids, or neonics for short, has made America’s agricultural landscape roughly 48 times more toxic for bees.

Bees and other pollinators are dying from exposure to these toxic pesticides — and we need to protect them. That’s why we’re calling on one of the country’s largest pesticide manufacturers, Bayer, to do right by our bees and stop making and selling neonics."

Sometimes I feel like an alien on this planet. At other times I feel alienated from those who populate it 🤷‍♂️.

I find comfort in being in the moment & nothing brings me closer to calm than #photography and #gardening.

Extreme closeup photograph of a bee sitting on the petals of a Rudbeckia flower next to the flower's conical center. Rudbeckia have yellow and maroon petals that radiate from a center filled with dark brown florets. I wasn't able to ID this bee species but it has the typical bee features and yellow, brown, black colors. The bee is facing the camera with its body behind it. Only the area in the same focal plane as the bees face and head are in focus.

It's been such a busy weekend at the Maker Faire. So early this morning, on this last day of the Maker Faire, I drew some busy bees before we headed out.

Here's an in progress shot.

Hand drawn generative/procedural art in ink on an open page of my sketchbook. The abstract pattern has some motifs that kind of look like bees.

I couldn't resist trying these Integer Partitions with bees. I figured partitions of three might fit on a page in my sketchbook. They barely fit. Ended up with some overlapping wings in today's #inkyDays drawing.

A video I really enjoyed filming. I love watching bees. Normally they stay busy and I just film, but this time many #bees actually started coming to my phone and flying about my head. Nothing bad happened, but they checked me out.

The cactus is a #SanPedroCactus or #EchinopsisPachanoi I believe. It's in front of my house in the parkway. Just a piece of cactus I stuck in the ground. #Gardening is like magic sometime.

If you look, though it's blurry, you can see one of my #HarrisForPresident election signs in the background thought it's not my #HarrisObviously one :)

Hey friends, Do you want to help with scientific research?
The University of Colorado Boulder needs people to help transcribe bee information from photographs of their collection. You look at a picture and type out any of the written information in the bee's label.

If you've got a few free minutes, give it a whirl! Even just doing 1 or 2 will help

So there's this Greek myth that says Zeus was fed by bees when he was born. In gratitude, he blessed them with the color of "shining bronze", and made them immune to cold and harsh winds. These bees lived in Zeus' sacred cave in Crete, and aggressively chased away anyone who tried to steal their honey.

Any #apiarist or #entomology expert out there who could tell me what these bees are by any chance?...
