Feeling the need for more energy this morning, so I drew some mitochondria for today's #inkyDays drawing.

Here's an in-progress shot.

Hand drawn generative/procedural art in ink on an open page of my sketchbook. The abstract pattern looks a bit like diagrams of mitochondria.

Playing with patterns from a cell in today's #inkyDays drawing. These are mitochondria and rough ER, with little ribosomes.

An average adult pelican pouch can carry up to 11 liters/3 gallons of water or up to 11 kg/24 pounds of fish, more than their stomach. So they’re kind of lunch boxes with wings. #birds #birdsofmastodon #nature #ecology #wildlife #photography #NotMyPersonalPhoto #biology #sunset

This year's already been a wild ride with the climate chaos, geopolitical drama, and now zombie spiders?

Gibellula attenboroughii turning cave-dwellers into fungal puppets feels like nature's way of saying, hold my beer, we’re not done yet. At least it's not humans… for now.

Primatologist Susan Perry has been studying capuchin monkeys for decades. Tim Vernimmen of @KnowableMag spoke to her about how that came to be, the challenges of observing animals that seem to move in fast forward, and what she’s learned about the similarities between humans and monkeys.

All known human languages display a surprising pattern: the most frequent word in a #language is twice as frequent as the second most frequent, three times as frequent as the third, and so on.

The same pattern is universally found across human languages bit also occurs in #whale song.

This complex signaling system, like human language, is culturally learned by each individual from others.

🚨 New #podcast is out now!

This week, we peaked into #CreatureCorner to share some #bear facts & shared our favorite bears in #fiction (but... bear ... with us b/c there are a lot we didn't mention🐻 !)

Trump #executiveorder declaring only ‘two #sexes’ gets the #biology wrong, #scientists say .

Order describes sex as an ‘immutable biological classification set at conception as either #male or #female’, but all #human #embryos start out as #female.

The lar gibbon or white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar), an endangered primate native to Southeast Asia. Habitat loss and hunting have caused a population decline of over 50% in recent decades. #wildlife #conservation #photo #environment #science #biology #animals
The lar gibbon, also known as the white-handed gibbon, is a small, slender ape with long arms built for swinging through trees. It has a soft, dense coat that can range from black to sandy brown, with white fur on its face and hands. Known for its loud, melodious calls, it moves gracefully, rarely touching the ground, living high in the forest canopy. They are endangered.

"Glass sponges are considered the oldest animals on Earth—and it’s by a long shot. Scientists estimate that they can live for more than 10,000 years, possibly 15,000 years maximum. One glass sponge observed by researchers in the Ross Sea, a bay of Antarctica, is thought to be the oldest living animal on the planet. Scientists have also discovered a skeleton of a glass sponge in the East China Sea that they believe lived for 11,000 years. These individual animals are so old that they could have been alive during the last ice age. "

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, has laid an egg at the extraordinary age of 74. While Laysan albatrosses normally live a monogamous life of 12 to 40 years, Wisdom was tagged in 1956 at the age of five and is thought to have produced more than 30 offspring and outlived three mates. Biologists say there is no record of a wild bird living past 45, making Wisdom’s longevity an astounding feat. Read more from @BBCNews

I think I am one of the only people of my generation (or maybe the last generation) who heard the word "meme" in the scientific context first.

I heard it in uni maybe in 2nd or 3rd year when one of my friends gave a talk about simulating evolution using software. Then, just one or two years later I started seeing the word "meme" pop up on the English-speaking internet literally everywhere.

Today's #SciArtSeptember prompt is "Membrane", so I decided to play with drawing a phospho-lipid bilayer. I usually draw these with black ink, but I felt like adding a little color today.

Update. New study: "Most journals [in #biology] offer minimal support for scientists whose first language is not English…Only 8% of the journals made their complete guidelines to authors available in at least one language other than English; less than 7% allowed authors to publish articles in languages other than English; and a mere 10% explicitly approved the use of references published in a language other than English."

So there's this Greek myth that says Zeus was fed by bees when he was born. In gratitude, he blessed them with the color of "shining bronze", and made them immune to cold and harsh winds. These bees lived in Zeus' sacred cave in Crete, and aggressively chased away anyone who tried to steal their honey.

Any #apiarist or #entomology expert out there who could tell me what these bees are by any chance?...
