Just started on Duolingo for Portuguese and the app is teaching me phrases like "He reads a newspaper."

I'm like: "Look, bird, print journalism is dead, okay? No one is reading newspapers anymore."

« Language addresses itself to the ear. No other medium does this. The ear is the most spiritually determined of the senses. That I believe most men will admit. Aside from language, music is the only medium that addresses itself to the ear. Herein is again an analogy and a testimony concerning the sense in which music is a language. »

You're welcome

The epic I am currently reading described a horny god's state of mind as "a welter of prurient thoughts"

And I am now thinking this could be a great title for... something?

What would you use this phrase for?

😄😄

The Invention of Clouds: How an Amateur Meteorologist Forged the Language of the Skies (Richard Hamblyn)

The story of how cloud types were named by Luke Howard at the turn of the 19th century. The book gives great historical context starting from the 1600s, about the birth of meteorology and the difficulties of cloud classification. I finally learned how the categories work.

I find it kinda hilarious that in some folk traditions swearing was used to ward off evil spirits.

Me: *swearing elaborately and profusely*

Demon: *clutches pearls* "Well, I never...!"

Swearing saves souls people 😄

#Hungarian expression of the day:

"A béka segge alatt" = "Under the frog's ass"

(Very, very low, in mood or in quality. I.e. "The economy is under the frog's ass.")

For more severe cases, there is "Under the burrowing frog's ass."

Update. Can #AI solve the problem of #language #discrimination (good research by non-native speakers rejected from English-language journals on the ground of weak English)?

(#paywalled)

Natalia Kucirkova argues no. The best bots may be good enough. But they are not accessible to all who need them, and "non-native researchers still have to invest extra time & more dollars to fix their papers than their native colleagues."

Every German has a special inner place to be "snapped" into. If there's a problem, they just "click" into position, and everything can continue to operate normally.

When I learned the word "eingeschnappt" it was like a veil lifting from my eyes.

Foreigners often complain about #English words creeping into their native languages.

If only they knew.

In my homeland, English has taken over so completely, most residents speak it as a first #language. They wouldn't even be able to tell you the name of our native language.

It's #Massachusetts. 🙄

That's the language. That is what it is called.
