Should Oil and Gas Drilling Expand in This Biodiverse National Forest? The Public Overwhelmingly Says No.

Conecuh National Forest is a biodiversity hotspot. Could oil and gas development put that at risk?

A new PwC report reveals that most companies remain committed to their climate goals. Despite economic uncertainty and shifting regulations, 84% of businesses are maintaining or even accelerating their decarbonization efforts. Only 16% have slowed down or stepped back from their commitment

Been busy all last week cutting down the borders. With the temperatures on the up, I reckoned that everybody is out now of their winter quarters in stems and seedheads.
The photograph is of the middle third of the #garden, viewed across. Behind the camera is the greenhouse, a little more space and a tall hedge.
Later in the year, this area is filled with tall, flowering #perennials, ornamental #grasses and #wildflowers - you cannot see from one side to the other. It is beautiful, undisciplined and overflowing with nature.
At this time of the year it is just flat. I am anxiously waiting to see what will come back.

Declining Biodiversity and Emerging Diseases Are Entwined, More Study Needed

Instead, complex interactions between factors (including climate change, habitat loss, agricultural practices, and closer contact between wildlife, livestock and people) can contribute to emergent infectious diseases and new pandemics

"In [Asia and Northern Africa], oases cover 1.5% of the dryland area and are populated by 150 million people ... Globally, oases contain more than 8,200 vertebrate species, of which 13% are classified as threatened. However, less than 0.5% of their total area is currently under protection, making oases one of the least conserved ecosystems worldwide"

Primatologist Susan Perry has been studying capuchin monkeys for decades. Tim Vernimmen of @KnowableMag spoke to her about how that came to be, the challenges of observing animals that seem to move in fast forward, and what she’s learned about the similarities between humans and monkeys.

and I saw it as it really was: a great, timeless force of life,
nature on a more than human scale,
seen for an instant
just as the first humans to arrive here must have seen it: something awesome and abundant,

Veined sun orchids (Thelymitra cyanea) starting to open in swampy heathland near Monga, NSW. This widespread summer-flowering sun orchid is generally found in the mountains above 1000m in NSW but can be found at lower altitudes closer to the coast in East Gippsland, VIC.

Last purple donkey orchids (Diuris punctata) for the year in Croajingolong NP, VIC (mid-Nov). Good to see increased numbers of these beautiful orchids at this location in a season where spring rainfall was fairly low and many other orchids were harder to find than usual.

Best patch of hyacinth orchids I've seen out so far this year at Corunna, NSW - Dipodium punctatum (purple hyacinth orchids). Starting to see a few more plants up and out around the local district - hopefully today's first real rain since winter will help them along!

Cymbidium sauve (Grass-leaf Cymbidium / snake orchid) at Corunna, NSW. Flowering was a little reduced this year with very little spring rainfall at Corunna but the few plants still out enjoyed some rare moisture from an afternoon storm passing through today.

Several really nice variations in both colour & floral structures in this year's Corunna backdoor sun orchids (Thelymitra sp. - maybe T.peniculata and/or T. pauciflora). Almost all plants set seed (probably self-pollinated as many flowers didn't open at all and those that did were generally only open for an hour or two) so there should be another good showing next spring!

Salt Marshes, Isle of Harris, Scotland.
by Nils Leonhardt. They’re unique coastal ecosystems that where salt-tolerant plants thrive. Not as ecologically rich as a rainforest, but still make a big impact on the environment #ecology #photo #nature #marsh #earth #conservation
Scottish salt marshes differ from those in England, with many familiar English species found only in the southwest of Scotland or absent altogether. In Scotland, the lower ‘pioneer’ salt marsh that grades into mudflats is scarcer, and many Scottish systems have an abrupt seaward margin that gives way directly to mudflats

Here is a globular springtail (around 2 or 3mm in size) floating on water and cleaning themselves with a water droplet. They use the water droplet to clean but also to moisten their skin as a way to retain water. As they are so small, losing too much water from their body is a danger. They are often found in damp and moist environments. This one was filmed in my garden a couple of days ago on a barrel which had filmed with rainwater.

When the final man sits, dying, on top of the final hill and looks out across the toxic, burning hellscape he helped create that is now unfit for human habitation, will he experience regret?

No.

He'll die thinking he won.

Some victory.

LA on fire

"The loss of more than 90 per cent of #SouthernCalifornia’s agricultural buffer zone is the principal if seldom mentioned reason #wildfires increasingly incinerate such spectacular swathes of luxury real estate. [...] what makes us most vulnerable is the abruptness of what is called the ‘wildland-urban interface’, where real estate collides with #FireEcology." - #MikeDavis

Toxic lover: Genetically engineering males to have venomous semen could wipe out disease-carrying insects

One way to shrink populations of disease-carrying pests is known as the sterile insect technique: Basically, you release tons of sterile males to mate with fertile females, preventing them from successfully adding to the next generation. While the method can work well, it requires enough males to be released to flood the mating market. In addition, fruitlessly mated females can still transmit disease until they die. Now, researchers have found a way to up the efficiency: Instead of males’ semen lacking viable sperm, it contains lethal toxins from a venomous animal.

When researchers tested the approach on fruit flies, they found that toxins from anemones and Brazilian wandering spiders were most effective, reducing the median lifespans of mated female flies by up to 64%. Additional modeling they performed suggested such mortality would reduce female mosquito populations faster than other approaches and lower blood feeding by as much as 60%. Even better, because these venom toxins are more molecularly targeted than broad-spectrum insecticides, the animals are unlikely to develop resistance to them, the team claims.

They aim to test the idea in mosquitoes next, and if all goes well, such “toxic males” could be deployed in as little as five years.

Many people think of the ocean like a bathtub — turn on the faucet, and water levels rise everywhere. As the planet warms and ice melts, they assume that the ocean might act in the same way.

Sea level rise, however, is very uneven. Thanks to a complex set of factors, water levels are not rising at the same speed everywhere. And these factors have made the U.S. South particularly vulnerable
