The oak tree in the ten minutes of afternoon sunlight today. There might be some birds in there somewhere 😂

We don’t have squirrels (well@the very occasional red one but never in the garden) so what is digging up my just planted tulip bulbs????

Two jasmine bushes and one gardenia in flower together make for a very fragrant patio.

I have been told that it is customary to do an #introduction post, so here I go.

I love #cats, have 2; #squid (arsehole) and #newton (fatso).

#music is important to me and I have something playing most of the time.

#sewing and #knitting are my hobbies as well as #gardening. I sound like an old woman! Oh wait I am!!

Love #books have way too many. Too many on #baking and #crafts

Oh I talk too much and laugh way too loud - might also find me dancing in the aisle of my local supermarket.

xx

My husband and I (and our dog, of course) make our agrarian adventures in the Appalachian mountains where we raise honey bees, coturnix quail, vegetables and fruits, microgreens, and more. We have a lovely rescue rabbit we adore, named Siegfried, who keeps us well-stocked with some of nature's best fertilizer.

Formerly Tickfoot on another server I took a long (and refreshing) social media hiatus and am excited to meet like-minded folks on here again.

Our allotment AGM today and we made a significant step towards increased biodiversity on our site. Agreeing in principle to allow small-scale ponds on individual allotment plots.

We need to agree the specifics of the ponds that will be allowed (size, depth, materials used, sustainability, location etc) but provided plot holders meet this criteria they will be allowed small ponds on site next year.

Home alone for the weekend so the garden is getting the treatment… pruning, planting (trees, bulbs), tying in, and mulching.

You think it’s a good idea to buy 600 bulbs when they’re reduced in the early sales. Less amusing when you have to get the buggers in the ground.

Grey day but the mild weather leaves much still blooming which is ace.

A video I really enjoyed filming. I love watching bees. Normally they stay busy and I just film, but this time many #bees actually started coming to my phone and flying about my head. Nothing bad happened, but they checked me out.

The cactus is a #SanPedroCactus or #EchinopsisPachanoi I believe. It's in front of my house in the parkway. Just a piece of cactus I stuck in the ground. #Gardening is like magic sometime.

If you look, though it's blurry, you can see one of my #HarrisForPresident election signs in the background thought it's not my #HarrisObviously one :)

Every chewed leaf is proof that our gardens are part of a living web.

Yet beneficial insects that naturally prey on aphids, mites, etc. can help keep pest populations in check. Flowering plants such as yarrow, dill, and fennel, create an inviting habitat for garden allies like ladybugs, lacewings and hoverflies.

A biodiverse garden isn’t just good for pest control; it also supports pollination and soil health. Native plants support a diversity of beneficial insects.

They also provide food and habitat for local wildlife, birds, and pollinators, encouraging a garden that’s healthier, more resilient, and truly in harmony with nature.

Some more autumn flowers in my garden. First two photos: Begonia grandis 'Alba', which is holding its blooms for a really long time this year. Perfectly hardy and perennial in the #PacificNorthwest. Second photos: Mahonia 'Charity', a hybrid of our native Mahonia aquifolium and a Chinese species. A prickly, geometric nightmare of a shrub with winter-blooming flowers that attract hummingbirds It's blooming very early this year.

A bunch of flowers in the late afternoon sun. They have payment leaves with bright red undersides typical of begonias, and white delicate open flowers with yellow centers. The stems are also reddish at the joints.
Another view of the same flowers as previous photo. The late afternoon sun makes the leaves glow brilliant yellow green. They are growing through a white metal railing beside a sidewalk
Flowering tops of a shrub with prickly holly like leaves arranged in very geometric rows like a xycad or fern. The flower bracts are like upside down squid tentacles with tiny yellow bell shaped flowers like suckers
Closer view of the yellow inflorescences of the same plant, backlit by the late afternoon sun

One of the last plants to flower in my garden: Aconitum x carmichaelii 'Arendsii', or monkshood. It's been suggested as an easier-to-grow alternative to Delphiniums and that's been true for me, although monkshood doesn't come in true blue but mostly purple or lavender. Low maintenance, light shade tolerant, very easy. Handle with gloves and keep away from pets and kids though, it's quite toxic.

A tall herbaceous flower in a garden bed. The leaves are light green and palmate and the flowers above them are clusters of purple blooms. The day is bright and sunny and the late afternoon light is golden. In front is a tall purplish grass like plant. Beyond is an evergreen tree.
Closer view of the blooms from the previous photo. Each is shaped like a hood from a sweatshirt.
Another closeup view of the monkshood flowers.
Very close view of a bloom showing the velvety texture of the flowers and the delicate veining on n them.

Clearing out all the past-their-prime zinnias from the front garden bed yesterday and this giant swallowtail showed up and hung around the lantana long enough for me to go grab my camera.
