Spring cleaning this weekend to get ready for new gardening season. First, the compost needs to be turned. The first thing to know about compost is that there are a lot of ways to do it, and a lot of people are convinced that theirs is the only right way. I ignore them. I am a lazy composter. I don't balance my greens and browns, I don't take temperature readings, I don't turn the piles more than a few times a year. I use the three bay system.

A compost area with 3 bays. The structure is made of cedar 2x4s and wire mesh. The bin on the left is full of leaves and has a wooden gate over its front. The other two are full of brownish black compost and their fronts are open. A storage shed and some bushes are visible in the background.

I want to buy a book on compost and would be grateful for recommendations. I like the titles of "Compost Science for Gardeners" and "The Science of Compost". Am leaning toward the latter because author is a scientist. But perhaps there are other titles to consider? #compost #composting #compostodon #gardening #soil #science #SoilEcology

I’ve lived most of my life without a patch of land to grow stuff in. Now, I have a square of sad, pointless grass. I’ve made the leap and planted some cold resistant carrots in a grow bag & made the first wild spring salad with dandelions just come up. May my spoons hold…I have plans. #gardening while #spoonie Any green thumbs in cold climes have tips for easy wins? I’m new at this. #orkney #Scotland #compost #allotment

we’re confident that our biggest issue in our #garden this year was lack of organic matter in our beds (since this was our first year #gardening and we didn’t have any #compost to start off with).

to address this, we’re trying a few different things:
- a tumbling composter primarily for kitchen scraps (mixed with various brown material)
- mesh composters filled with invasive/exotic plants, hay, leaves, and used hemp bedding, in layers
- an old plastic composter that i neglected last year, to be left open over winter to finish decomposing
- “chop and drop” on some of our beds

#compost enthusiasts: i’d be so grateful for your thoughts! does this seem like a sensible approach to maximize compost for next year? we live in a temperate climate where it doesn’t remain below freezing for long

boosts encouraged!

A dual-compartment compost bin is shown, partially opened to reveal organic material inside. The bin features a green and black design and sits on a concrete surface, surrounded by grass and plants.

Looking for a #climateaction resolution for 2025? Start composting, and tell people you do.

It means less methane from landfills.
Methane is a really potent greenhouse gas.
Landfills are a major source of it.

I've composted for years. It's easy - stuff rots. The nuances come in if you want fast good compost for #gardening, but to just lessen trash, it's very simple.

My rules... (cont)

I got a worm farm! Since I started trying to grow my own food and composting I've wanted one but with moving it was just one more thing to move.

So now we've moved and I have one!

Big thanks to @Uselessgeneration colleague who passed on his old worm farm.

Pretty sure I'm more excited than the average person to have pet worms now! They're mainly going to be used for composting my dog's poop - will definitely report back on how that goes!

Thursday 5th December is World Soil Day. I will celebrate the feel of healthy soil on my hands.

Much of the soil we depend upon for our food is in a degraded and poor quality state.

Conventional agriculture is killing soil life with the use of fossil fuel derived artificial fertilisers, pesticides, insecticides & herbicides.

Foods are not as nutritious as they were just 100 years ago. Be part of the change we need.

I'm often curious about putting unprinted cardboard, or printer paper, napkins, paper towels etc in my home #compost. Does #compostodon know if these materials have unsavory chemical contamination or microplastics?

Abschlussarbeit Möglichkeit bei Finizio, die meist fortgeschritten Kompostklo/urinal Firma die ich kenne

https://finizio.de/jobs/#urinaufbereitung

"Finizio entwickelt einen Reaktor, in dem Urin aus unseren Trockentoiletten in Nitrat umgewandelt und daraufhin als Nährstoffzugabe in Kompostmieten eingearbeitet wird. ... Es handelt sich um einen Moving Bed Reaktor (MBR) mit einem Ozon-Beipass."

Falls du eine Person kennt, die Biochemie/Chemie studiert.
