Scottish salt marshes differ from those in England, with many familiar English species found only in the southwest of Scotland or absent altogether. In Scotland, the lower ‘pioneer’ salt marsh that grades into mudflats is scarcer, and many Scottish systems have an abrupt seaward margin that gives way directly to mudflats
