For #MarshMadness and in (dubious) honor of #WorldFrogDay I've painted a water scavenger beetle, Regimbartia attenuate. These tiny, unassuming guys are famous for their ability to avoid predation by frogs... by crawling right out the other end, unscathed. Prevailing theory is that a strengthened exoskeleton keeps the beetles safe from digestive enzymes as they crawl their way through the frog's digestive tract, and air pockets trapped in the elytra allow them to breathe until they can get some fresh air outside.

Watercolor of a very round, dark beetle with pitted elytra.

I did some watercolor painting examples at work of trees, which I love to paint. The first one was sort of spring-ish, then I did a rain day, winter and warm summer.

#watercolor #trees #nature
a collage of 4 watercolor painted trees. One is spring, one in the rain, one winter and one warm summer.

I think it says everything about this piece when I tell you that it has been lying around finished since July and that I scanned it over a week ago and am only now uploading it.

I mean it's fine. I was trying out things and it's fine. *shrugs*

A watercolor sketch of a gray house with a red roof, tucked into bushes and trees, lit by the morning sun. A road is leading into the back of the picture on the right, and there are light and phone poles.

I finished painting the sailing person. I’m keeping this one, I like it so well, but I’m going to try and make more.

#watercolor #art #sailing
A hand holding up a watercolor postcard with a watercolor and ink drawing of a smiling person in a purple sweater standing on a little brown sailboat, long hair blowing behind them, with three big rows of rolling waves in blue-green-purple beneath them, clouds overhead, and a fat and happy yellow sun in the right hand corner.

I had a bad day and was about to go to bed frustrated when @kaiserkiwi jokingly said "You know what would make me happy? A duck with a hat".

So I spontaneously painted this. And now I'm a little bit happier too. #watercolor
A watercolor illustration of a duck wearing a top hat is displayed on a piece of white paper. Surrounding the artwork are painting supplies, including a watercolor palette, brushes, a pink cloth, and colored pencils, all set on a wooden table.

First post! I'm moving off Meta and all corporate-owned sites and looking forward to actually getting to see the things that people post instead of being force-fed by algorithms.

I'm an indie writer, a watercolorist, an amateur photographer, a sewist, a crafty person and generally ADHD so who knows what I'll end up posting here. Just looking forward to seeing what everyone shares.
#introduction #watercolor #newhere
Watercolor of an ocean scene with scattered clouds and small islands in the middle and background.

This is a more close-up, realism (for me) #watercolor of the previously burned area farther down 12 towards Kenwood. Different foliage and trees. I parked and painted what was in front of the parking lot. Not a quick sketch, this was over an hour. About 2, actually.

This area was burned in 2017 by the Tubbs Fire. More recovery in the growth.

Plein air in San Francisco

My last post is mostly paintings of hills and the ocean. That's right, it's another watercolor episode.

Watercolors by American artist Emily Sargent, 1900s-10s, who often traveled and painted alongside her brother, painter John Sargent, but her work was largely unknown to audiences until a trunk holding hundreds of watercolors was discovered in the late 1990s.

Watercolors by Palestinian artist, filmmaker, and inventor Vladimir Tamari, 2000s-10s. Though he lived in many other countries throughout his life, including Lebanon and Japan, his work often explored themes of Palestinian culture, diaspora, and liberation.

Happy Color Wheel Wednesday to all who celebrate! This is the second in a row, so now it’s officially a real thing! See how easy that was? This particular color wheel was made with exactly five pure #watercolor pigments. You can see the pure pigments in the ring of small circles closes to the center.

#color #colorwheel #mathart
Complex color wheel that looks a bit like a faceted gem. The design has five-fold symmetry and lots of circles and arcs that cut the surface of the paper into many tiny regions in many different colors.

sometimes nothing feels better than painting in a little book at midnight, I don’t make the rules
