I think I am one of the only people of my generation (or maybe the last generation) who heard the word "meme" in the scientific context first.

I heard it in uni maybe in 2nd or 3rd year when one of my friends gave a talk about simulating evolution using software. Then, just one or two years later I started seeing the word "meme" pop up on the English-speaking internet literally everywhere.

Precambrian Earth: Co-evolution of life and geodynamics

Big article reviewing Earth-Life co-evolution in the Precambrian.

"The interaction of life and Earth was and is reciprocal, hence the term biogeodynamics...." True.

Today's #SciArtSeptember prompt is "Membrane", so I decided to play with drawing a phospho-lipid bilayer. I usually draw these with black ink, but I felt like adding a little color today.

Hand drawn generative/procedural art in ink on an open page of my sketchbook. The abstract pattern is inspired by the microscopic structures in a cell's membranes. My glass dipping pen is next to my sketchbook. There is a watermark across the image that reads "#SciArtSeptember Day 25: Membrane by Kristin Henry"

"Duke University has decided to close its herbarium, a collection of 825,000 specimens of plants, fungi and algae that was established more than a century ago. The collection, one of the largest and most diverse in the country, has helped scientists map the diversity of plant life and chronicle the impact of humans on the environment.

The university’s decision has left researchers reeling."

Update. New study: "Most journals [in #biology] offer minimal support for scientists whose first language is not English…Only 8% of the journals made their complete guidelines to authors available in at least one language other than English; less than 7% allowed authors to publish articles in languages other than English; and a mere 10% explicitly approved the use of references published in a language other than English."

So there's this Greek myth that says Zeus was fed by bees when he was born. In gratitude, he blessed them with the color of "shining bronze", and made them immune to cold and harsh winds. These bees lived in Zeus' sacred cave in Crete, and aggressively chased away anyone who tried to steal their honey.

Any #apiarist or #entomology expert out there who could tell me what these bees are by any chance?...
