And yes she took shorter but an intenced dance tonight, my dear friend Aurora Borealis.

Two images from tonight.

Read #AltText for image descriptions
A starry night with aurora borealis, northern lights in the sky over the forest silhouette. At the lower part of the image the aurora is intensed green and a bit paler green above. Higher up in the sky are a lot of pilars of lilac aurora, and at the top it is blue.
Another image of the dancing aurora borealis but a bit different veiw with some trees closer at the left side. Just above the trees the aurora has two broather pilars of pink with some blue around and above them. A green bow-like fast moving and pulsating aurora is visible above the trees in the distance and the sky above is a bit darker blue than the first image.

The Dark side of the forest.

From the archives
The image is made by zooming with the camera during exposure to make it look like it is moving.

Read #AltText for an image description.
An image of the roots from a fallen tree. It looks like the upper body of a creature on the move. The head reminds a bit of an elephant with hair flying behind its head, some teeths and a trunk and arms or legs infront of it. It has a feeling of a nightmare and is a very dark black and white image.

I guess that "bare minimum" alt-text is better than no alt-text.

But giving people who can't view images high quality alt-text - a chance to enjoy an image properly - is (to me) just part of treating people kindly.

It takes but a few seconds to type an extra sentence or two.
Bad alt text: "Cat"

Good alt text: "A tabby cat sitting on a windowsill, looking out the window with its tail curled around its body."

Raids and book burnings

Nazi Party members at the Opernplatz

book burning in Berlin On 6 May 1933, while Hirschfeld was in Ascona, Switzerland, the Deutsche Studentenschaft made an organised attack on the Institute of Sex Research, A brass band accompanied them as they arrived in the morning. After breaking into the building, the students destroyed much of what was inside, and looted tens of thousands of items — including works by authors who had been blacklisted in Nazi Germany. Following this, the leader of the students gave a speech before the institute, and the students sang Horst-Wessel-Lied Members of the Sturmabteilung (SA) appeared later in the day to continue looting the institute.

Four days later, the institute's remaining library and archives were publicly hauled out and burned in the streets of the Opernplatz by members of SA alongside the students. A bronze bust of Hirschfeld, taken from the institute, was placed on top of the bonfire. One estimate says that between 12,000 to 20,000 books and journals, and even larger number of images and sex subjects, were destroyed. Another estimate says that about 25,000 books were destroyed.

Anxiety

Yesterday I accidentily broke my only camera while taking photos. Since my camera is a hugh part of who I am, it feels sad and as I lost my best friend. I have no idea when I can fix it (if it´s even possible) or get a new one. So there will not be anything new from me for quite a while, I still got some photos in my pipline though.

📣 Announcing Altbot 2.0: The Privacy & Green Update 🔒💚

Exciting news! After months of development, Altbot 2.0 is officially launching with major improvements to privacy, efficiency, and description quality.

What's new in Altbot 2.0:

  • 100% local AI processing for true privacy - unlike Google Gemini which saves data for training, Altbot 2.0 retains ZERO information about you or your images using the powerful Ovis2:8B model running on my custom AltTron server equipped with an A5500 GPU and expansion capacity for two additional GPUs
  • Full GDPR compliance with clear informed consent - I've implemented comprehensive privacy measures including transparent data handling policies, user rights protection, and minimal data collection practices that exceed GDPR requirements
  • Better quality descriptions across all 11 supported languages thanks to a newly developed translation layer specifically optimized for local LLM models
  • Significantly more energy efficient with a new feature that shows you exactly how much energy was used for each request! This efficiency comes from using a server-grade GPU optimized for lower power consumption, and 36% of the energy consumed is from clean sources mainly nuclear power (thanks to being based in Georgia)
The only data Altbot 2.0 records:
  • That a request happened
  • How long it took to complete
  • What type of media it was (image, video, or audio)
  • What language was used
No images, no content, no personal data saved - ever.

For those who don't know, Altbot has been helping make the Fediverse more accessible by automatically generating alt-text descriptions for images. The project has grown beyond anything I imagined, now serving thousands of users across the network.

Support Altbot's Future 💝

To bring these privacy and efficiency improvements to life, I had to invest in a more powerful server than initially planned. The server costs exceeded my budget by around $900, which I've covered out of pocket. Who woulda thought that competing with a $1.98 trillion dystopian mega corporation would be expensive? Shocking, I know.

I've set up a Ko-fi fundraising goal to help recover these costs and support ongoing development: Ko-fi.com/micr0byte

Your contributions will help ensure Altbot remains:
  • Free for everyone
  • Continuously improved
  • Sustainably maintained
Even small donations make a huge difference and motivate me to keep enhancing accessibility across the Fediverse!

This milestone represents a commitment to ensuring accessibility doesn't come at the cost of privacy or environmental impact. I'm incredibly proud of what we've built together.

As Altbot continues to grow, I'm open to sharing more about this journey with anyone interested in accessibility, ethical AI, or Fediverse projects.

For press inquiries: inquiries@micr0.dev

Feel free to boost or reach out!

On February 10th, the Educational Bookshop in Occupied East Jerusalem was raided by Israeli police - books were confiscated and the owners Mahmoud and Ahmad Muna were arrested.

Today, around 11:30am local time, police raided the Educational Bookshop again, confiscating more books and arresting Ahmad's father (aged 61) who was tending to the shop at the time.
Here is a local story on the second raid:
https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2025-03-11/ty-article/.premium/israel-police-raid-east-jerusalem-bookshop-for-second-time-in-a-month-arrest-owner/00000195-8515-d544-aff5-879d87e80000

What the story does not contain is a list of the confiscated books (later returned). I was at the store when the books were returned and was able to get pictures, which I attach here.

Note: Among the books they confiscated were a book on rock climbing in the West Bank (???), books by Banksy, Joe Sacco (Safe Area Gorazde - a book on BOSNIA, not Israel), Noam Chomsky, and Ilan Pappe.

I'm sorry, I don't have time to #alttext these photos. Please do so if you can and I'll happily add it to the post!
I'd also like to make these into a list with links to descriptions of them at their publisher.

As an educator, this should cross a red line for all educators. It is nothing compared to the scholasticide and genocide in Gaza, but the lack of pretext for raids like this on a bookshop peacefully operating for 40 years should get everyone's attention.

Here is a link to the Educational Bookshop website if you'd like to learn more about them: https://educationalbookshop.com/

Stop feeding your inner demons

An abstract image of sunlight and shadows on the ground. There are a lot of old withered leaves laying spread out all over the place. To the right a shadow that reminds of a hugh dog of some sort, sitting next to the shadow of a person on its left side. The person is holding up one hand towards the shadow and the other one is held up as if they say hello. The sunny area behind the person looks like a ghost with with the head above the person, and as if it got horns and eyes.

It might be worth pointing out that not only people with visual and/or auditory impairments benefit from #AltText. It can be useful in many other ways, too.

To me, as an #autistic person whose perception and information processing work in quite different ways, it is not always clear what the point of an image is. Some good alt text can help a lot.

Some clarifying background info in alt text can also be very useful for the general public (which helps to normalise the use of alt text).

Your thoughts, please...

How can we advocate for more #AltText on #Pixelfed ? I see so many obvious #Instagram migrants there, posting lots of images without AltText. For me, it's especially frustrating when I see comic strip panels with tiny text in the balloons, that I can't even read when zoomed on my phone.

I've politely mentioned it a few times privately to those accounts that most need it, and left one AltText suggestion in one comment, but I don't think the community there feels about it as strongly as we do here on #Mastodon .

What can we do to encourage it there, also?

Woop woop!

I just manadged to get a shot of polar stratospheric clouds from my balcony right now. They are very rare where I live (a bit to far south).

Forest Creatures on the Move in the Mist.

The two photographs are made with in-camera double exposures.

Another vertical image of trees in the misty forest. It is mostly pine trees but there is one small deciduous tree to the left. The soil is covered in lichens, moss and some fallen down branches. At the center of the photo stands a big and old deciduous tree that ends with two big brances aboute two thirds up, and those big branches looks like curved horns like an antelope have. The image is black and white.
A vertical image of pine trees in a misty forest. A bit to the left one of the pines have grown a bit curly and makes it look like some sort of creature with long hair standing up and are reaching out with one of its arms. Most of the trees have old and crakced bark, but one pine to the left has lost some of its bark, perhaps made of a woodpeckers work. The soil is filled with lingonberry twigs and moss. It is a photo with dull and pale colours due to the mist.

Fascinated by Northern flickers since I 1st learned they exist. The spot pattern on their chest (not seen here) looks JUST like the holes they make in trees! Remarkable coloring & that shock of red! Was lucky to catch this beauty drinking from the Iowa River in 2023.

Photograph of a northern flicker standing on a bark-less dead tree branch that is partially submerged in dark brown water. The flicker is facing away from the camera and has turned its head to the right in profile leaving one eye visible. The flicker has a water droplet running down its beak indicating it has just taken a drink. Flickers have brown back and tail feathers with black barring and scalloping, yellow undertail and underwing feathers, light brown abdomen and chest feathers with black spotting, a prominent black bib, tan neck and face feathers, gray head feathers with a vivid red crescent across the back of the head, a long black patch next to the beak, a slightly curved black beak, and gray legs and feet.

A detail of ice in a puddle with abstract patterns, almost as if there were to hang fabric or strips of paper on the diagonal from the upper left side down towards the right. A bit to the right is a shape of a heart uppside down with a airbubble at the top. A lot of tiny air bubbles at the low right end. The surface of the ice almost looks like some sort of metal being polished.

Some mossy rocks to the right and a couple to the left a branch is hanging down in front of the rocks to the left. There is a bit brighter light out of focus on parts of the moss.
This photo is a bit closer look at the mossy rocks that where on the right in the first image, and with a little bit different angle that makes the rock look like a big face.

Folks, look at alt text not as a thankless burden imposed by others on you, but an engagement engine that will consistently bring grateful content consumers to your doorstep.

The power is yours. #alttext #accessibility

How do I get notifications or some other way to nudge me to write alt text when I create a post on Pixelfed?

I am prone to forgetting, unfortunately. Most of my pictures posted on Mastodon have alt text since there is a bot that reminds me to do it whenever I forget.
