When planning a whistleblower policy, consider the company’s needs, existing policies, processes, and functions, including compliance, legal, reporting, procurement, disclosure, and communication.

This image shows a document or slide with the title “Address Risks & Opportunities” in bold purple text. Below the title, a bulleted list outlines key points: encourage reporting, support and protect whistleblowers, ensure timely handling of reports, improve organizational culture and governance, and reduce the risk of wrongdoing. At the bottom, the word “Planning” is highlighted in purple, followed by “Whistleblower Management Systems” and “ISO 37002” in smaller text. The website “hushline.app” is placed in purple text in the bottom right corner, and the design features a soft purple curve along the right edge.

7 free open-source tools for amazing photo and video edits

A desktop monotor showing the GIMP application open for photo editing. Various icons are situated around the central edit area. In the editing area is shown a photo of a living room with a smal;l table on the left, in the centre a chair which is facing the left rear corner of the room. Against the far wall is a table with what looks like a large screen TV on top of it.
While there is no shortage of powerful photo and video editing tools, most of them come with a hefty price tag or require a subscription to get started. It may discourage students, beginners, and freelancers from exploring them fully. Luckily, thanks to free, open-source tools, you don’t need to shell out hundreds of dollars to achieve stunning results.

XDA Developers have short-listed their choices in the linked article below, and explained why each has been chosen.

I’d certainly also add digiKam for photo editing. It has some very powerful features, including advanced geolocation editing, batch editing, blending of stacked images, OCR text generation, creation of calendars, creation of panoramas, RAW editing, camera control, and exporting to numerous cloud services including Flickr, Imgur, Piwigo, Pinterest, etc.

Slackware is a Linux distribution created by Patrick Volkerding in Jul 1993. It is the oldest distro still in existence. However, someone was dissatisfied with Slackware and created another distro a month later, in August 1993. This was Debian, the second oldest distro, founded by Ian Murdock. Both of these distros are still maintained, and Debian is often known as the "mother distro" because it has spawned many more distributions. #Linux #OpenSource #history

A Christmas Strike

Instead of giving unnecessary gifts this year, we give loved ones home-made Christmas cards:

“This year, I’m giving you a gift of democracy. This card represents a purchase not made, money that #billionaires cannot use against civilisation. I hope this is a gift that you shall be able to use in the future.”

or donate on their behalf to #opensource & #linux projects — things we actually need.

Mensinator is an open source privacy respecting period tracking app for Android

Screenshot with title that says Statistics. It then lists periods tracked 5, average cycle 30.75 days, average period 4.25 days, next predicted period 2014-10-02, ovulations tracked 4, average ovulation day 13, next predicted ovulation 2024-09-15, and average luteal phase length 17.75 days.
Mensinator provides a clean and intuitive interface for tracking your menstrual cycle, monitoring your periods, and viewing essential statistics—all without the need for sign-ups or sharing personal data. All information is stored securely on your device, ensuring your privacy is always protected.

It’s not the only such app on F-Droid, but coming from F-Droid means it is proper compiled open source code, and says what it does. There is no Big Tech company requiring registration to install it, or having privacy intrusive adverts inserted (which usually track and report locations).

There are a few countries in the world today where such information needs to be kept private to protect their citizens’ privacy. Open source respects the individual’s right to decide how they want to use their software.

When on the internet, all I want to do is read text, see images, and watch videos. That tech existed 20 years ago. All commercial #webdevelopment since then has intentionally had the goal of making that harder. It has accomplished little else other than providing the ability to order things.

#Capitalism did not create the internet (c.f. ARPANET) and it is seemingly incapable of improving it. I'm not sure how it got to be in charge.

Humans, rise

EDIT: Now updated with ISO 639-1 codes!

Do you speak Croatian (hr), Breton (br), or Scottish Gaelic( gd)?

All three of those languages have slipped under 70% translation for Thunderbird for Android! Normally this would mean removing them from the app. But we're hoping we can rally some translators to help complete these languages - or at least get them over 70% translated!

Update. If you *want* to use #AI for #PeerReview:

"Several publishers…have barred researchers from uploading manuscripts…[to] #AI platforms to produce #PeerReview reports, over fears that the work might be fed back into an #LLM’s training data set [&] breach contractual terms to keep work confidential…[But with] privately hosted [and #OpenSource] LLMs…one can be confident that data are not fed back to the firms that host LLMs in the cloud."

#libobscura text #logo - I made another logo for when it's necessary to have a prominent name.

Which one do you like more? The one with blur or without?

Poll in comment.

Logo saying "obscura", and "o" is a pinhole casting light on the other letters.
Same as the other one, but letters get blurred towards "a".

Update. Turns out that John #Deere has been using open code under the #GPL w/o living up to the license. The Software Freedom Conservancy (@conservancy) is calling on it to comply — which would greatly enhance #farmers' #RightToRepair.
https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2023/mar/16/john-deere-gpl-violations/

"We…publicly call on John Deere to immediately resolve all of its outstanding GPL violations…by providing complete source code…that the GPL & other copyleft licenses require, to the farmers & others who are entitled to it."

The European regulators listened to the #OpenSource communities! - https://blog.opensource.org/the-european-regulators-listened-to-the-open-source-communities/ "While it’s all much better, and while the burden placed on individuals and charities is minimal, there are still challenges ahead. "

In the meantime, any folks involved in FOSS communities open to an interview? I want to explore more about the human side of FOSS communities, and intend on publishing interviews to a new blog project I'm starting (Fosset).

I come from a tech, compsci, FOSS, and journalism background, so no matter what your involvement in FOSS, you're in good hands :)

Audio/video preferred, email/text works as an alternative.

Here's my #introduction

I'm Nathalie, interested in sociocracy, commons and open-source with an academic background in (biochemical) engineering. I love working with self-organised groups towards social change.

foodsharing.de was my main project over the last years, now I'm working with karrot.word. Looking into group governance I'm very into sociocracy and Sociocracy for All being my home for that!
