The security issues fixed this month impact Android versions between 12 and 15.

• The CVE-2024-43047 flaw is a high-severity use-after-free issue in closed-source Qualcomm components within the Android kernel that elevates privileges. The flaw was first disclosed in early October 2024 by Qualcomm as a problem in its Digital Signal Processor (DSP) service.

• CVE-2024-43093 is also a high-severity elevation of privilege flaw, this time impacting the Android Framework component and Google Play system updates, specifically in the Documents UI. Google did not disclose who discovered the CVE-2024-43093 vulnerability.

To apply the latest update, head to Settings > System > Software updates > System update. Alternatively, go to Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates > Security update. A restart will be required to apply the update.

[BEWARE!!!] Android Malware "FakeCall" now reroutes Bank Calls to Attackers. :androidalt:

Researchers have found new versions of a sophisticated Android financial-fraud Trojan that’s notable for its ability to intercept calls a victim tries to place to customer-support personnel of their banks.

FakeCall (or FakeCalls) is a banking trojan with a focus on voice phishing, in which victims are deceived through fraudulent calls impersonating banks, asking them to convey sensitive information.

In addition to vishing (voice phishing), FakeCall could also capture live audio and video streams from the infected devices, allowing attackers to steal sensitive data without victim interaction.

The malware also exploits the Android Accessibility Service to capture screen content and manipulate the device’s display to create a deceptive user interface while mimicking the legitimate phone app.

Overview of latest FakeCall attacks.

The FakeCall malware typically infiltrates a device through a malicious app downloaded from a compromised website or a phishing email. The app requests permission to become the default call handler. If granted, the malware gains extensive privileges.

A fake call interface mimics the actual Android dialer, displaying trusted contact information and names, elevating the level of deception to a point that's hard for victims to realize.

What makes this malware so dangerous is that when a user attempts to call their financial institution, the malware secretly hijacks the call and redirects it to an attacker's phone number instead.

What's a good keyboard replacement for Googles #GBoard on #Android? Ideally supporting swipe input? What do you use? Boosts welcome!

PSA: Google has now begun to roll-out the Ad Topics "feature" onto Android itself. It's not just in Chrome you have to disable the settings. Please #Boost to spread awareness.

If you didn't get the pop-up screen on your Android device (it'll look like the first two screenshots), to opt-out of these settings:
  • Go to your device Settings
  • Press on "Google"
  • Press on "Ads"
    • While you're here, press on the "Delete Advertising ID" button and delete it
  • Press on "Ad Privacy"
  • Review: "Ad Topics", "App-suggested ads", and "App Measurement". Make sure they are all labelled as "OFF". (This page will look like the third screenshot.)
If you don't see "Ad Privacy" in Step 4 then it means that it hasn't been rolled out to you yet. You might need to wait and check back in a couple of days to see if/when it has been implemented to disable these settings.

EDIT: There's another setting to review. In step 2, scroll to "Personalize using shared data". Turn everything off.

New ads privacy features now available

Android now offers new privacy features that give you more choice over the ads you see.

Android notes topics of interest based on apps you've used recently. Also, apps you use can determine what you like. Later, apps can ask for this information to show you personalized ads. You can choose which topics and apps are used to show you ads.

To measure the performance of an ad, limited types of data are shared between apps.

• Android notes topics of interest based on the apps you've used recently.

Apps you use can also determine what you like based on how you use them. For example, if you use an app that sells long-distance running shoes, the app might decide that you're interested in running marathons.

Later, an app you use can ask for this information - either your ad topics or ads suggested by apps you've used.

Android auto-deletes topics and app-suggested data regularly. You can also block specific topics and apps you don't want to make suggestions.

Measuring how well an ad performs Apps you use can ask Android for information to help them measure the performance of their ads. Android lets apps collect limited types of data, such as the time of day an ad was shown to you.

Some: "You should make a Fediverse Enhancement Proposal"
Others, when you take initiative: "You don't need what you're proposing, and should use this other method starting today, without a Fediverse Enhancement Proposal"

This, plus people talking past each-other, not introducing themselves & their backgrounds (which helps understand viewpoints) and assuming technical knowledge of everyone involved - it's really quite discouraging.

NewPipe is an open-source streaming client for Android that lets you watch/download from YT without ads. Recently they also added support for PeerTube, Bandcamp and more. I can now stream my favourite albums from Bandcamp without dealing with a browser.

I use this to listen to music without wasting bandwidth on video streams and battery on keeping the screen on.
