The new idw expert database

The new centrepiece of idw's expert placement service has been an expert database.

Our idw members can upload extensive information about their own institution's experts.

Journalists accredited with idw can search for experts in the expert lists
or search for any keywords directly in the database or filter the entries by region and language.

Take a look - it's worth it!

Contaminated soils from the 1979 oil spill in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Over 45 years later, these soils are still hydrophobic (repel water) resulting in a sparsely vegetated landscape. We're studying how industrial hemp can help remediate these soils.

Researchers in Australia, Europe, the UK, and Canada funded by the US are being asked if their work touches on topics like DEI or climate & environmental justice— topics denounced by the current administration.

It's another example of the deteriorating climate for the freedom of scientific practice in the US.

As someone studying climate history and politics with a focus on the United States, I find this deeply alarming.

The Trump administration is withdrawing funding for scientific research. I have a suggestion for my colleagues: Every minute that you are unable to conduct your research, you should devote to public advocacy in support of higher education. https://stevendbrewer.com/a-suggestion-for-my-colleagues/ #science #research #HigherEducation

Mastodon #research 🚀

I’ve officially completed my studies and want to share some insights from my thesis on user activity on Mastodon!

Using API data and a user survey, I analysed what drives user activity. Key findings were:

📌 Instance size & active engagement (tooting, interacting) are the strongest predictors of user activity.
📌 Governance structures & technical infrastructure play supportive but less decisive roles.

Here’s a graph with the correlation results from the user study:

" #DOGE and #DonaldTrump are trying to shut down advanced medical #research, especially #cancer research, in the #UnitedStates...

What’s important is this bigger picture...

They’re shutting down medicine/disease research... throughout the United States."

Text from article(edited for length):
...I think it’s important to state categorically and clearly: DOGE and Donald Trump are trying to shut down advanced medical research, especially cancer research, in the United States... Reporting is inevitably focused on canceled grants, dismissed researchers, bans on certain forms of communication, on and off-again bans on travel, grant review processes halted.

...Reporting has a hard time stepping back and evaluating the systemic picture, goals and inevitable outcomes. If you shut down cell respiration in an organism, the organism will die. And that’s a decent model for what’s happening in these organizations. Only it’s not just cell respiration – it’s every other foundational life process, along with whole digits and limbs simply being removed all at once and carted off for disposal.

My point is simple. We – and I’ve been guilty of this myself – get pulled into each strand of the story: travel, comms, paused grants. What’s important is this bigger picture. It has to be seen as such. They’re shutting down medicine/disease research in the federal government and the government-run and funded ecosystem of funding for most research throughout the United States. It’s not hyperbole. That’s happening. You can’t try to stop something unless you understand it. There’s that final point at which the body dies. It becomes a corpse. It can’t be revived.

Humor and the flu, two things that go together like... like... like...

Okay, let me start over: for a clever and very timely capture of thinking surrounding the 2009 Swine Flu pandemic, PutnamPig's Swine Flu Song -- issued as it was just getting its foothold in the US -- is probably the best go-to. Find out why in this blog post!

The events of the past weeks have again upped the urgency of moving away from the US tech cloud. After forever Google and 18 years GitHub this is hard for me.

Friends. I’m honored to be part of a team who is archiving data being targeted by fascists: science, health, DEI, climate…all of it.

It’s exhausting, mentally psychologically. But totally worth it.

A blog post today on the Seelengärtlein (Hortulus animae), one of the hugely popular prayerbooks of the 16th century. Both a bit about how to find copies and a bit about indexing the thing. I love me a good spreadsheet! Oh, and there are woodcuts. But the Hellmouth is from a different print...
