#AI #search engines cite #incorrect #sources at an alarming 60% rate, study says
CJR study shows AI search services #misinform users and ignore publisher exclusion requests.

"AI models incorrectly answered more than 60 percent of queries about news sources."

"Perplexity provided incorrect information in 37 percent of the queries tested, whereas ChatGPT Search incorrectly identified 67 percent (134 out of 200) of articles queried. Grok 3 demonstrated the highest error rate, at 94 percent."

This is fine meme: relaxed dog in headphones, eyes closed as the room burns around him. Thought bubble: We have analytics, no one has complained, it's beta.

Good grief. This is far, far worse than I thought possible. On average, #AI #search assistants were confidently incorrect on > 60% of queries. Especially pleased Grok 3 was incorrect on > 94% of queries! 😉 All tip of the iceberg stuff.

AI agents delivered "confident presentations of incorrect information, misleading attributions to syndicated content, and inconsistent information retrieval practices."

How many years I needed to learn how to search my own posts. 🙄 It's too easy. 🤭 Type into the #search:

from:@username searchwords
or
from:me searchwords

It also works (for yourself) if you have disabled being in the public search.
Thanks @MythingPerson for the 2nd, much easier method!

After some reading and thoughts, I have refreshed my ~15 years old browser + search engine setup. And the winners are @Vivaldi and Ecosia (and a note on @Qwant).

As a Netscape/Mozilla user, I can't remember when I became a Firefox user but really early on. All this time it has been my browser for everything (first) and then for personal use (see below). I have collected stickers, I have met Mozilla Foundation staff, and I even applied a long time ago. +

it's nice to see reporting that doesn't mince words.

"Google’s featured snippet is pulling in an Amazon AI summary of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi manifesto Mein Kampf that calls it “a true work of art” in the latest AI-related fuckup affecting top search results."

Having ditched my subscriptions to NYT (long ago), WaPo and the LA Times, I'm glad to be a paid subscriber to the journalism from places like @404mediaco.

Google the phrase:

what products did apple announce yesterday

Every time I try this, I get different results. But NONE mention the actually iPad Air/iPad 11 announcement.

I hear about the iPhone 16e, and sometimes get a rumor about a new iPad.

Also, no joy from Siri, ChatGPT.

Wondering if this is a lag in the time it takes for AI to ingest news to making its way to the web page?

Anyone else seeing this?

I had hoped to get more blogging done this year but with the state of <waves arms at world> I need to find replacements for a whole bunch of stuff.

* I'm no longer on Twitter or participating in Facebook
* Goodreads account long abandoned; can someone recommend a genre fiction Bookwyrm instance?
* Blogger is owned by GMail, so I'd like to move off of it - any platforms any better?
* What should we move to for a browser that isn't fascist enabling?

You Can Now Search the Internet With ChatGPT

The image shows a computer screen displaying a weather forecast for Boston, MA on October 31, 2024, using the ChatGPT 40 interface. The dark mode interface shows the current temperature is 78°F and mostly sunny. In the foreground is a detailed weather report for the next week, including highs and lows, along with weather descriptions. The background shows a standard web browser interface with the URL bar displaying "chatgpt.com". A small, almost unnoticeable, "Share" button is present in the top right corner. There is an alert for a severe weather statement in effect until 8:00 PM EDT. This detail is important as it highlights a safety concern that's not immediately obvious from just looking at the overall sunny forecast. The subtle text and information regarding the 1946 and 1974 temperature records further demonstrate the attention to detail for creating a rich weather history.
ChatGPT search has been out now for about a month and a half, following a Halloween announcement from OpenAI. With this new feature, the company finally rolled out an official competitor to AI search engines like Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, and Microsoft Bing (powered by Copilot).

OpenAI originally announced its search plans back in July, with a service called SearchGPT. While SearchGPT was a prototype and launched with a waitlist to try it, ChatGPT search took its place, with OpenAI rolling SearchGPT’s main features into its new search feature. The feature originally launched to paid subscribers only, but now, all users can access it.

We all know that AI can hallucinate, so it is good to now have another good AI search tool that can be used for comparative purposes. Also, for those you actively avoided Google’s tool, this will offer a more neutral alternative option.

Google is under siege:

"People are increasingly getting answers from artificial intelligence. Younger generations are using other platforms to gather information. And the quality of the results delivered by its search engine is deteriorating as the web is flooded with AI-generated content."

For "other platforms", think TikTok (for info) and Amazon (for goods).

Fascinating piece, with good links to follow for more.

“[Summarization tools incorporated into the search engines are] a boon for people seeking quick answers, but a bane for publishers. Disincentivizing curious users from clicking through to a news site for additional information—a trend called zero-click search—sends less traffic to media outlets that invest in the costly #reporting that #AI machines are scraping, strip-mining, and synthesizing.”

""Some of the starkest examples looked at how Google treats certain health questions. Google often pulls information from the web and shows it at the top of results to provide a quick answer, which it calls a Featured Snippet. Presch searched for "link between coffee and hypertension". The Featured Snippet quoted an article from the Mayo Clinic, highlighting the words "Caffeine may cause a short, but dramatic increase in your blood pressure." But when she looked up "no link between coffee and hypertension", the Featured Snippet cited a contradictory line from the very same Mayo Clinic article: "Caffeine doesn't have a long-term effect on blood pressure and is not linked with a higher risk of high blood pressure".

The same thing happened when Presch searched for "is ADHD caused by sugar" and "ADHD not caused by sugar". Google pulled up Featured Snippets that argue support both sides of the question, again taken from the same article. (In reality, there's little evidence that sugar affects ADHD symptoms, and it certainly doesn't cause the disorder.)""

Update. I've been playing with #Elicit, one of the new #AI #search engines. Apart from answering your questions in full sentences, it cites peer-reviewed sources. When you click on one, Elicit helps you evaluate it. Quoting from a real example:

"Can I trust this paper?
• No mention found of study type
• No mention found of funding source
• No mention found of participant count
• No mention found of multiple comparisons
• No mention found of intent to treat
• No mention found of preregistration"

Folks should take a look at the #fullTextsearch function that Eugen is proposing for #Mastodon and how closely it resembles the #search patch of the woman who he kicked off the Mastodon repo GitHub & Discord a couple of months ago. Also, her patch was more configurable that the thing he's bringing to main that has zero attribution of her work. #fediverse#mastodev#MastoDevs
