"In 2007, the #hashtag was a simple, yet revolutionary idea that changed the way we organize and amplify content. Today, it is either endangered or more useful than ever, depending on whom you talk to. On the #opensocial web, #hashtags are an important unifying mechanism — not just for content but for people too.
What’s next for this small but mighty feature and for the web at large? Here to tell us is #ChrisMessina, the inventor of the hashtag."

Pro Trump bots seem to infiltrate the #fediverse. I blocked two praising the turd and a pro-fascist liar. Guess cleaning a #hashtag-based timeline is the downside of hashtag based feeds in a non-algorithm server.

Nothing is perfect. I assume the onslaught will increase. I just hope I don't have to unfollow hashtags. I like hearing from many people I never would have come across without it.

Wenn ich mir eine neue Funktion für das #Fediverse wünschen dürfte, dann wäre das ein #Filter für mehr als xx #mentions und #hashtags …

So #fediverse / #mastodon / #activitypub people, what do we have by now that is a usable alternative to facebooks group- & event feature?

I have a number of friends who work in event-related contexts, play in bands, do art exhibitions etc. most of them are still at metas platforms for basically 1-2 reasons. Twatter doesn't really matter at all to them because no feature keeps them there.

The Main reason for most of them to stay with meta is to promote their events & the easiness to invite people to an event or self-subscribe.

The other reasons are groups/channels where people have sub-discussion threads, that "feel a little bit isolated from the rest of the platform".
I'm not 100% convinced, that this can/can't be substituted by something like "only display this toot to people following the #hashtag" or something similar.

Reason number three is network effect at the end of the day, which is not really technically addressable from "our side" imho. Being able to show easy to use alternatives should be doable tho.

Hashtag bezieht sich ja auch auf die Tags mit einem Hash (#) vorne dran. Also auf Social Media z.B. #hashtag.

The thing that is missing from your diagram is that while #Fediverse servers CAN communicate with each other, not all of them DO. This is most noticeable when you follow a #hashtag - If you are on a large, well connected instance you will see many (maybe almost all) posts containing that hashtag. If you are on a small instance, or an instance that is not well connected (for whatever reason) you will see only a small percentage (maybe close to 0%) of the posts made using that hashtag.

In situations like that, from the user's perspective the #Bluesky / AT protocol is superior, because with the centralized server and corporate relays pretty much anything posted using a given hashtag will be seen by all those who follow that hashtag.

I'm not saying we all should move to Bluesky. I'm saying that this is a problem that needs to be solved by whoever writes the software for #Mastodon and similar Fediverse instances. And if there already is a solution but few instances are using it, what is that solution and where can you find a list of instances that are already using it? I understand there will always be some blockages because instance operators don't want traffic from certain types of instances, but I'm not talking about that, I am talking about cases where a post with a hashtag doesn't reach your instance because no one using your instance is specifically following the user that made that post.

@FediTips Quick question: if a #Hashtag is one word, is it OK for it to be all lowercase for accessibility sake or does it also need to be capitalized?
