Hausputz, Teil 1: Social Media

Am Wochenende wollte ich mir endlich eine Übersicht über die diversen Dienste und Anwendungen verschaffen, die sich in den letzten Jahren und Monaten auf meinen Servern angesammelt habe. Leute, habe ich eine Überraschung erlebt.

Oder bin dran verzweifelt, je nach Sichtweise. Kurzum, da muss eine Menge runter. Aus Gründen.

Irgendwann fing das Ganze damit an, dass ich (m)eine eigene Mastodon-Instanz haben wollte. Zuerst auf einem gemieteten VPS, dann in einer VM auf der heimischen NAS. Im Laufe der Zeit kamen weitere Dienste wie #Friendica, #Pixelfed, #Iceshrimp etc. dazu.

#Castopod und #Peertube lasse ich jetzt mal außen vor, da diese doch wesentlich andere Zwecke erfüllen als die klassischen Facebook-, X- und Instagram-Alternativen.

Aktuell verwende ich hauptsächlich Friendica als Zugang zum Fediverse, lange Zeit war allerdings #Mastodon für mich der wichtigste Dienst. Leider musste ich dort nach jedem Update erneut die Zeichenbegrenzung von 500 auf 12345 erhöhen, da ich kaum etwas weniger mag als endlose Threads aus kleinen Häppchen eines langen Texts.

Friendica erfüllt so ziemlich alle meine Ansprüche, mit entsprechenden Resourcen auch erfreulich schnell. Gut, ich kann an Umfragen nicht teilnehmen, aber die betroffenen Posts öffne ich dann halt in #GoToSocial. Letzteres läuft auf einem kleinen VPS als Backup für den Fall, dass die Technik daheim ausfallen sollte oder Vodafone an der Leitung schraubt.

Die aktuelle Planung schaut also wie folgt aus:
• Friendica bleibt als Hauptinstanz, GoToSocial als externes Backup.

• Castopod und Peertube laufen ebenfalls weiter, auch wenn der Podcast eher selten bespielt wird.

• Alle drei (in Ziffern 3) Pixelfeds werden gelöscht, sobald ich einen Weg gefunden habe, die Posts und Bilder zu exportieren. Diese schiebe ich dann entweder per Script gesammelt nach Friendica oder integriere sie statisch in mein Blog. Hat vor Jahren schon mit Instagram funktioniert, auch wenn es einiges an Handarbeit war. Pixelfed als Service benötige ich eigentlich nicht mehr, die überschaubare Anzahl von Bildern pro Woche oder Monat passt auch in mein Friendica-Profil.

• Mastodon behalte ich aus sentimentalen Gründen. Ich wüsste gerade nicht, was ich mit den knapp 17.000 Beiträgen sonst machen sollte.

• Ersatzlos gestrichen werden also die Dienste, die nur aus Neugier installiert und praktisch nicht genutzt wurden: Iceshrimp, Glitch und Misskey.

Am Rande sei noch #Bluesky erwähnt.

Ja, ich habe vor Wochen einen eigenen PDS aufgesetzt und per AddOn mit Friendica verbunden. Nach wie vor sind leider einige für mich wichtige Personen nicht im Fediverse zu finden, aber zumindest auf Bluesky zu lesen. Ich selbst bin dort nicht wirklich aktiv, ab und an setze ich bei neuen Friendica-Posts den Haken, um eine Kopie des Texts rüber zu schieben. Allerdings ist es recht praktisch, Posts von drüben in die lokale Timeline gespült zu bekommen.

Den VPS, auf dem der PDS läuft, werde ich kündigen und das Geld in eine zweite Storage Box investieren. Offsite Backups sind wichtiger.

Es werden also einige Ressourcen frei. Mal schauen, was ich damit anfangen kann.

In the comments below some defenders of this #Bluesky opt-out AI scraping change say something like, "It just gives users more control over their content." Like it is a good thing. This is baloney.

You don't need to put a sign on your car saying it is not okay to break into this car. It's your car.

This "control of your own data" argument is nonsense. You have control of your own data, it's yours. All you can be tricked into doing is giving it away.

Let's just try one more thought exercise. Let's say Eugen Rochko told tech media that all content on mastodon.social was going to be sold to AI scapers and "bulk dataset" brokers, but you had the ability to "opt-out" by checking a box that would insert the robots.txt header.

Can you imagine?

And yet, Jay Graber's announcement flies under the radar. This is what happens when you've constructed a cult of personality around your enshittification. Enough of the gaslighting.

Let's get into this. #Bluesky is bleeding money and selling your data is the best way they have of "monetizing" you. So why not frame it as a "voluntary" initiative?

I just came across an article that says #Bluesky now supports uploading videos up to 3 minutes long.

Sorry for the extremely newbie question but I wonder what the impact would be on the hypotethical of a self-hosted relay?

In a phenomenal article from last year @cwebber wrote that running a relay in November 2024 required 5 TERABYTES of storage (https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky)... up from 1 TB in July 2024.

Does video make Bluesky decentralization / self-hosting a relay even more unattainable? 🤔

Interestingly, there is a similar phenomenon on #Bluesky because they don't send a referrer on mobile. If I extrapolate the rate of visits from other posts on PC, I get a rate of 20% of "extra traffic". I added that to the graph, too. ☝🏼

I feel like #Bluesky should just give up on decentralization for now and embrace the fact they are currently centralized.

Finding a financial path to exit to community and building in legal & technical participatory #governance seem like much more achievable and urgent goals right now.

Flashes has just launched as an excellent Instagram alternative for Bluesky recently, but it is iOS only, which leaves the vast majority of the world out in the cold. The Fediverse also has Pixelfed as a similar alternative to Instagram, but for the Fediverse.

From what I can see of Pinksky, this app is maybe the closest then that Android users have to an Instagram alternative on Bluesky.

The app subtly puts the photo before any post text, and there is also an option to filter on photo posts only. The two images below show the different ways that the Bluesky and the Pinksky apps show the same post.

What also makes the Pinksky app quite useful for finding images is the way it presents the Search screen. Below, I entered the search term “Landscape” and it defaults to Top posts, but you can change that to Recent Posts.

Although you can put the search term “reels” in, and view the results in a grid layout, it would be great if Pinksky rather added a new filter to their main feed view, which could filter just on reels that can be scrolled up the screen.

The link below will take you to the Pinksky site, which will display on a desktop or mobile app. But you can also opt to install their app from the two mobile app stores. It looks like it is a web app implementation, which is why it is cross-platform compatible.

Lieber Holger, da hab ich auch keine Antworten, sondern nur noch mehr Fragen. Sind die Nutzenden von #xitter für die #Demokratie verloren? Wie kommt es, dass MusikerÏnnen, die für den Frieden singen, ihren Verdienst an Spotify CEO Daniel Ek spenden, der daraus Waffen-KI baut? Und: wie kommen wir da wieder raus?

Ich würde ja manche Menschen für ihre Twitter- oder Spotify-Mitarbeit gern beschämen, wenn ich ehrlich bin. (Da ist ein 14 Jähriger mit großem Gerechtigkeitssinn in mir, der echt empört ist.) Aber ich glaub, das hilft den Beschämten (und Dir und mir) nicht, da raus (und hier her) zu kommen. Christof hat doch mal das Bild mit dem Sog und dem Schub gehabt. Ich denke, Du und ich können für mehr Sog sorgen indem wir hier tolle Sachen teilen. Content liefern für's #Gemeinwohl sozusagen, statt für Mark, Elon und Daniel.

Ich glaube übrigens, es gibt einen Unterschied zwischen X und Kontrafunk. Ersteres war wohl mal akzeptabel und durch den Netzwerk-Effekt fällt es vielen Nutzenden schwer, von dort los- und woanders anzukommen. Ein Interview mit Kontrafunk scheint weniger notwendig zu sein. Aber da ließe sich streiten.

Außerdem: In meiner Wahrnehmung verabschieden sich mehr und mehr NutzerÏnnen von X. Manche gehen zu #bluesky (manch Herdplatte muss scheinbar 2x angefasst werden), Andere suchen und finden andere Lösungen.

Ach so was. Jetzt sind es doch noch ein paar Antworten geworden.

Das ist nicht zu retten. Es war von Anfang an ein schlechtes System, nur darauf ausgelegt, Profit zu machen. Und nun trägt es auch noch dazu bei, unsere Demokratie zu zerlegen. (...)

taz: Das heißt, wenn wir Hass und Hetze und die ganzen anderen problematischen Aspekte der Plattform abschaffen wollen, müssen wir gleich den Kapitalismus abschaffen.

Simon: Nein, notwendig ist das nicht. Es reicht fürs Erste, wenn wir dafür sorgen, dass unsere Kommunikation nicht mehr nach kapitalistischen Gesichtspunkten gestaltet wird, sondern nach der Frage: Was nützt den Menschen, was zaubert das Gute aus uns raus? (...) Das ist der Schlüssel. Und es ist ja nicht so, als gäbe es keine Alternativen. Mit dem Fediverse gibt es eine gute, offene Alternative zu den kommerziellen Plattformen von X bis Instagram."
