„The Tech-Right is united, but less by their scattered reactionary ideologies, and more by their shared class interests. They want us divided, thinking we’ll fight each other over the scraps they offer us, or by generating the latest outrage on social media platforms they control.

We need to organize and build around our shared class interests, reaching across divisions, around common goals and struggles. We want homes for everyone. We want a livable planet for our children. We want control over our labor. We want to abolish the systems that are destroying us.

In the 1990s, anarchists, labor unions, anti-sweatshop activists, and environmental groups helped mobilize thousands in militant protests against corporate globalization, all under a Democratic president. A banality just occured to me. I love when that happens. It often signals something important stirring inside. It is that there's no position from which you can see all of the #Fediverse. Donna #Haraway calls it the god's eye view. Instead, knowledges are "situated" - specific servers from which you see something particular, not everything. It is baked into the protocol. The task now is to unlearn the paradigm of #surveillancecapitalism, care for our worlds and build bridges between them.

"So I feel the issues here are ultimately systemic policy problems that need to be fixed with regulation (such as enact national right to repair laws, de-fang the DMCA, implement US national privacy protections, somehow limit the massive seemingly untouchable influence of big tech companies, and probably tax down tech billionaires).

That’s a big ask that feels insurmountable at this moment, but it’s a movement can start now with people who are fed up with our current de facto abusive tech business models. I think eventually we will get there anyway, because the I am not sure the current extractive model is sustainable without encountering massive social unrest within the next decade. The alternative to change, if taken to an extreme, may be the collapse of personal liberty for everyone.

In the meantime, while these lofty goals simmer and take shape, you can also continue to take personal steps to preserve your own tech liberty. Support nonprofits like the EFF that fight for privacy and user rights, strong encryption, open source, use local storage, and so on. I highly encourage it.

Ultimately I hope these thoughts can be a starting point for others to pick up the torch and build off of. I will also be thinking of constructive solutions for a future follow-up."

I used to trust #Microsoft more than other #bigtech platforms, mostly because I used #Excel a lot in my work.

I switched from #Chrome to #EdgeBrowser a long time ago for work (and use #Vivaldi for private stuff).

However I just had to set up my work profile in Edge again today, and Microsoft's #consent for #tracking has really gone to shit.
