Edit: the fundraiser has been taken down by Donorbox - this is not the first time this has happened while trying to help affected families. People have reported the page before, while trying to demand proof from families that need to remain anonymous - to avoid ICE stalking them. Still watch the video - *especially* if you're a cishet white person in the US. There is a message that needs hearing there.

Please, watch this. Especially if you are a cishet white person in the US. And *do something.*

If nothing else, share the fundraiser around, to help this family and others impacted in #Maine towards justice. Help them stay in the community that they call home - that they have *every right* to be in.

From my one and only trip out East. This is from a foggy fall morning at Camden Harbor, Maine.

#UniversityOfMaine’s #USDA funding restored

by WABI News Desk
Published: Mar. 12, 2025 at 9:05 PM EDT

Maine (WABI) - "Senator #SusanCollins announced Wednesday that the University of Maine’s funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been restored.

"On Monday the University received notice that funding from the USDA was paused.

"According to UMS, the notice stated the pause was temporary while the USDA evaluated potential follow-up actions related to prospective Title VI (6) or Title IX (9) violations.

"Collins released at statement saying:

'This USDA funding is critically important not only to the University of Maine, but to our farmers and loggers, as well as to the many people who work in #Maine’s #agriculture, #aquaculture, and #forestry industries. Now that funding has been restored, the work that the University does in partnership with the many people and communities who depend on these programs can continue.'"

Two Transgender Girls, Six Federal Agencies. How Trump Is Trying to Pressure Maine Into Obedience.

Maine said it wouldn’t break state law to follow President Donald Trump’s order barring transgender girls from playing girls’ sports. Then came a barrage of investigations and threats targeting the state’s federal funding.

Good! Build it on #MackPoint, not #SearsIsland! Feds reject Maine’s request for $456 million to build proposed wind port at Sears Island

by Stephen Singer
October 22, 2024

"Rolf Olsen, vice president of the board of #FriendsOfSearsIsland, which manages a portion of the island set aside for #conservation, and an opponent of the Sears Island proposed site, said the federal decision 'would appear to be a significant financial blow' to develop the manufacturing facility.

"'We’re somewhat encouraged that the state’s port development grant application was turned down, especially since it only considered developing Sears Island and not Mack Point,' he said.

#SmilingHillFarm in the news -- for safely relocating #bees!

Hive with more than 40,000 bees removed from house at Smiling Hill Farm

by Russ Reed
September 19, 2024

WESTBROOK, Maine — "The family that owns Smiling Hill Farm is doing its best to protect a #BeeColony that has occupied a farmhouse for decades.

"The Knight family said a hive with more than 40,000 bees grew within the walls of a home on their property.

"The farmhouse is in need of renovation but instead of killing the bees, the Knight family wanted to save the colony.

"'For sixty-plus years, there's been bees in this house and it might be longer than that. It might be seventy or eighty,' said Michael Knight.

"On Thursday, Andrew MacDonald of Bee Huggah came to Smiling Hill Farm to safely relocate the bees from the farmhouse.

"'I believe that these bees are worth saving for a number of different reasons,' MacDonald said. 'They have medicinal value and they pollinate our crops.'

"MacDonald moved the bees to a hive outside of the farmhouse."

Here’s how the #BirdFlu is affecting nesting colonies in Maine

Wildlife questions answered by #MaineAudubon Staff Naturalist Doug Hitchcox.

February 14, 2025

Excerpt:
"Remember that #AvianInfluenza spreads via feces, saliva and mucus, which is why it spreads faster among birds in very close quarters (especially poultry in this country, hence the need for flock owners to take protective measures). #Ducks and #geese make up most of the cases in wild birds, but we are also seeing it show up in some of the predators or species that feed on the carcasses of sick birds, like #hawks, #eagles, #crows and #vultures. What we consider the 'backyard birds,' like #chickadees and #woodpeckers, are very unlikely to contract avian influenza, so there is no need to stop feeding those birds or take down bird feeders. You should always keep your feeders clean, but this is a good time to be extra vigilant with regular cleanings and also protect yourself from exposure. Avoid contact with a sick or dead wild bird. If you do have a report of a sick or dead wild bird, call Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at 207-287-8000 or 800-452-4664, or report it online. (More info: mefishwildlife.com)

"Think about the things you can do to help birds around your yard, be it during an avian influenza outbreak or not. Keeping your cats indoors is the best thing you can do, then treat your windows to break up reflections and reduce strikes. Support the next generation of birds with native plants: bird seed helps us see wild birds, while #NativePlants sustain them."

High levels of #ToxicChemicals found in #BrunswickMaine airport hangar #sewers

#CitizenPFAS monitoring revealed concerning levels of toxic chemicals in the sewer outfall of #Hangar6 in Brunswick, though a company hired to assess risk at the hangar said there is no leak of the toxic firefighting foams on the premises.

by Kristian Moravec, The Times Record
Posted February 4, 2025, Updated February 5

"A citizens group’s testing revealed that sewer water flowing from Hangar 6 at Brunswick’s airport has high levels of harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS.

"#FriendsOfMerrymeetingBay conducted testing on Nov. 26. The tests detected high levels of a particularly toxic #PFAS chemical compound known as #PFOS. The update comes the same day the owner of the hangar, the #MidcoastRegionalRedevelopmentAuthority, sent a letter to the town stating that tanks that stored the chemicals were not leaking.

"PFOS is a compound known to be harmful to human health and is found in high levels in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). Brunswick Executive Airport’s Hangar 4, which is owned by the Navy but operated by MRRA, dumped 1,450 gallons of AFFF concentrate mixed with 50,000 gallons of water on Aug. 19, 2024.

"The spill prompted ongoing cleanup and monitoring efforts as well as a push to get rid of the foam at the airport. Concern has grown around Hangar 6, which some have speculated is leaking harmful chemicals based on the testing data around the airport that Friends of Merrymeeting Bay has collected over the years. The sewage that flows out of Hangar 6, which is not treated for PFAS, ultimately flows into the #AndroscogginRiver."

Speaking of #Rewilding, some new signs went up at nearby #CaliforniaFields in Southern #Maine! Looks like the #MaineDepartmentOfInlandFisheries finally acknowledged that there are some #EndangeredSpecies there, and put the pressure on #BlueTriton / #PolandSprings / #BigWater -- who had planted a bunch of pine trees in the field (to hide the drilled wells that they claim are "springs"). But now they have to take them down and restore the grasslands! (And it's full of #Milkweed which the #MonarchButterflies love!)
#GrasshopperSparrow #UplandSandpiper #NorthernHarrier, #HornedLark, #Kestrel, #Meadowlark, #Bobolink
The tree harvest (begun in the fall of 2024) is part of a collaboration by BlueTriton Brands through its Poland Spring® Brand and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to restore the important grassland habitat at California Fields for the bird species below.

Grasshopper Sparrow: Small, buffy-tan colored sparrow with distinctive yellow eyebrow. Requires sparsely vegetated grasslands (bunch grasses) with patches of bare ground to forage for prey. As of 2024, Grasshopper Sparrows are only known at 3 sites the state, one of which is California Fields.
PRIMARY FOOD: (Arasshoppers, along with other simall insects and seeds.
Song: A insect-like, buzzing.
Nesy: Domed-shaped, usually hidden on the ground at the base of a grass clump
STATUS: Endangered

Upland Sandpiper - A shorebird that avoids wetlands and prefers to nest in large patches of grasslands, prairies, pastures.
Males of this species are known for perching on fenceposts and for their territorial/mating.
PRIMARY FOOD: Grasshoppers and other insects. -
Song: An unearthly trilling that first rises in pitch, then descends in a low whistle.
Status: Threatened

Here are some other bird species of concern that use California Fields
- Northern Harrier
- Horved Lark
- Kestrel
- Weadowlark
WHY PROTECT GRASSLANDS?

Since the 1970's, North America has lost one quarter of its birds. grassland bird species have accounted for over 50% of this loss.

California Fields is part of a sandplain grassland ecosystem. Historically, this natural community type was prevalent in southern Maine and was maintained by fire. However, over time most of these ecosystem have transitioned to forest due to fire suppression.

The tree harvest (begun in the fall of 2024) is part of a collaboration by BlueTriton Brands through its Poland Spring® Brand and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to restore the important grassland habitat at California Fields for the bird species below.

#Maine Law Firm Tells #PublicSchools to #ResistICE Enforcement by Destroying #Immigration Records

By Steve Robinson January 26, 2025

"A leading progressive law firm in Maine is advising public school officials on how they can effectively resist potential immigration enforcement actions that may involve the families of minors who attend government-run schools, including by destroying evidence of potential immigration crimes.

"The advice may place school officials in the legal crosshairs of the Trump Administration under a new policy advisory distributed by the U.S. Department of Justice, which warns state and local officials not to interfere with federal law enforcement activities.

"'[S]chool officials should generate a plan for what to do if immigration officials seek to conduct activities at school, and provide appropriate training to those who may come in contact with officials,' law firm Drummond Woodsum warned in an 'Immigration Client Alert' distributed on Jan. 21.

"A copy of that advisory email was obtained by the Maine Wire and is published [at the link] in full.

"The memo advises clients who may have evidence that a student and that student’s parents or guardians are not U.S. citizens or are present in the U.S. without authorization.

"According to Drummond Woodsum, school officials should destroy those records or stop collecting them so as to #obstruct or prevent federal immigration officials from enforcing American immigration law.

"Schools may have collected data on students’ #USCitizenship, #nationality, #CountryOfBirth, #USEntryDate, the date a student first attended school, or the #ImmigrationStatus of the student or their parents or guardians, the memo states.

“'[T]his information should not be stored as part of a students education record and should be destroyed as soon as it is no longer needed,' the memo states."

#Maine #RightToRepair Law Poised to Remain in Flux Even After January 2025 Effective Date

December 19, 2024

"The Automotive Right to Repair Working Group convened by the Maine Attorney General will review proposed legislation that would substantially amend provisions of the Maine Right to Repair Law concerning access to mechanical data from #telematics-equipped vehicles. Meanwhile, it appears provisions of the law requiring manufacturers of vehicles that 'use a telematics system” to comply with standards imposed by an “independent entity' designated by the Attorney General will take effect on January 5, 2025, even though neither the 'independent entity' nor standards for telematics systems will exist by that date.

"In November 2023, Maine voters approved a ballot initiative to require that, within one year of the effective date, vehicles using a telematics system sold in that state be equipped with an interoperable, standardized, and owner-authorized access platform across all of the manufacturer's makes and models. The statute requires that this platform be able to 'securely communicate' all 'mechanical data' emanating from the vehicle; make this data 'directly accessible' by the vehicle owner through a mobile-based application; and, upon authorization of the vehicle owner, 'all mechanical data must be directly accessible by an independent repair facility.' The statute gives vehicle owners and independent repair facilities denied access to mechanical data a private right of action to recover treble damages or $10,000, whichever is greater.

"The ballot initiative further requires the Attorney General to designate an 'independent entity' to 'establish and administer' access to vehicle-generated data that is transmitted by a 'standardized access platform.' The 'independent entity' is empowered to refer violations to the Attorney General, who in turn can 'institute an action' to 'enforce' the law, although no remedy for such a violation is defined in the statute. The requirements for telematics-equipped vehicles are supposed to take effect January 5, 2025—one year after the effective date of the ballot initiative—but to date the Maine Attorney General has not designated an 'independent entity' to develop standards or otherwise regulate data access platforms."

#SeedLibraries Are Sprouting Up Around the Pine Tree State

#Maine libraries have added seed “borrowing” to their growing list of resources.

By Nora Saks, Downeast Magazine, April 2024

"Among the study tables and the stacks of books and the periodical reading rooms, at public libraries from North Berwick to Milbridge to Bangor, seeds have suddenly taken root in the catalog — often quite literally, with the drawers of stately old card catalogs now used for little packets of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds. Whether green-thumbed or plain old green, anyone can drop by for some free garden fodder, which is usually donated by community members, Maine seed companies (like #Johnnys and #Fedco), and garden centers.

"Seed libraries took off early in the pandemic, as many people turned their attention to tending their homes and gardens. Now, libraries tend to pair seed lending with how-to programming, often in partnership with local garden clubs. Some libraries also encourage 'borrowers' to save seeds from their crop and then drop them off at the end of the growing season, but that’s not a requirement (and there are no late fees).

"Lisa Ladd, director of Bucksport’s Buck Memorial Library, sees seeds fitting nicely into libraries’ broader mission to make knowledge and resources accessible to the public. 'As libraries continue to evolve, we’re always looking for ways to meet the community outside of our walls and offer programs that touch different ages and all walks of life...'"

"The state of Maine has filed a lawsuit against five major oil companies and their top lobbying group, accusing them of carrying out a decades-long disinformation campaign about climate change and their contribution to it in order to maximize profits.
