Bass

The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of #Scotland. Approximately 2 km (1 mi) offshore, and 5 km (3 mi) north-east of North Berwick, it is a steep-sided volcanic plug, 107 m (351 ft) at its highest point, and is home to a huge colony of gannets.

At high zoom, the true density of the bird colony is obvious.

The more horizontal ledges of the island are painted white by guano and the overflow has almost completely covered the vertical faces. I nearly bailed and stayed home Saturday night when this image (any several to come) was captured. I managed to convince myself to get out regardless of how dull things were looking, and was rewarded 15 minutes later with this incredible side light. Lesson learned.

Standing on the shore of a large lake. There are small leafy shrubs to our right and left, several partially submerged boulders just offshore. In a sky streaked with long hazy silver clouds, the sun is setting above the wooded far shore, looking like a large blob of golden fire and tinting the streaky clouds near and along the horizon gold and orange. All this is mirrored on the lightly rippled lake surface.

Something brand new, the tree and ravens were captured in the highlands of Falls Creek here in Australia. We have very chaotic forests which means the fog is quite vital to making a clear composition. The ravens were captured in nearby trees as there are many found in this area, just not where you want them =P

"Golden Drapery", Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest (2024).

A crown of floating pines. This is a common occurrence on Scottish lochs and tells a deeper story of the #landscape. Deer can't access these islands and so isolated patches of ancient woodland remain unscathed — if we look across the shore, we see the barren backdrop beyond. I loved the way these backlit #autumn birch leaves framed the scene, giving a sense of time and place.
