Yesterday we had snow(storms)during the whole day. A good chance to process the photos of the Aurora the night before.
Let’s see, what the weather will bring us today 😎😇

The joy of the unexpected.

Yesterday was by any measure a totally shit day for me. Except for one brief break in the clouds. Metaphorical and literal.

I stepped outside at twilight to watch another aurora, and over the next hour the cloud cover thinned. And it was a marvellous show. I decided to pop up a camera and start a timelapse in case more nordlys arrived... and I got lucky

One of the best auroras I've ever seen.

Have been digging deep into DxO PhotoLab for my aurora photos and have been amazed just how much better the results are when pushing lenses to the limit.

It handles noise much better than Capture One, while still holding onto detail. And the lens optimisation for my Sigma 14-24mm is just amazing. Never seen such clarity in my night shots before.

Can't believe the software can make such an impact.

Aurora in full moonlight at Grovfjord. A creek spills into the fjord below, while a wave of aurora dances above the village. The moon is bright, just above the nearby peninsula.

Capture One version of same RAW file. 100% pixels showing detail in the terrain. Not so impressive.

Was a bit slow of the mark to notice we had clear skies tonight, and when I stepped outside to check the nordlys were already dancing.

Was a lovely show. The moon is super full tonight and lighting up everything. Hence the intense colours. Regardless, this moment of aurora was good enough to compete with the street light just behind the house :)

So frustrating. Good chance of an Aurora sighting and it’s cloudy.

I might have stayed up.

From two nights ago. We had clear skies last night but pretty close to zero solar wind. Plenty of stars but no aurora.

Some nights it's on fire, some nights it's asleep :)

This evening we got a little aurora dancing before dinner.

Am starting to get a better knack for reading the satellite data. I still tend to be overly optimistic about how quickly the space weather will arrive on earth, but at least I was ready and waiting when the nordlys began their thing.

I did leave the comfort of my log fire last night, and the clouds did clear away in time for a little aurora activity around midnight.

This planet is just such a remarkable place to live. It's worth preserving.

Victoria isn't particularly known for #aurora, but with the sun being at its solar maximum it's a great time to keep an eye on the night sky.

Despite spending about 9 weeks in Iceland and Norway (during late autumn/winter) the past 18 months, two of the best Auroras I've ever seen have been right here where you normally never see them. Fingers crossed for some more soon!

A rock stack along the Great Ocean Road of Victoria, Australia is captured with the green glow of Aurora Australis above. Fortunately no one else was on the beach at this time which allowed me to play with light painting to capture the lines of waves which would otherwise be blurred together over the long exposure.
Tubberlungener Mount Buffalo's granite monolith the Cathedral is gently illuminated by pre-dawn light while the Aurora Australis creates beams of pink light behind.
Rock stacks on Victoria, Australia's Great Ocean Road with the Aurora Australis shining behind in greens and reds. The aurora is gently reflected in the wet foreground sands.
The Horn is a viewpoint on Tubberlungener Mount Buffalo which faces direct South. The lookout made of rocks makes for a great viewpoint with Aurora Australis shining in red beams and green curtains of light below.

Increasingly I find myself moving towards more gentle expressions of aurora photography.

I've always been averse to the hyped up saturation that dominates aurora photos on social media. Our eyes don't see those pimped up colours, and it takes a lot of tweaking in Photoshop to get the camera to deliver them anyway.

I like reality. I think the real world is beautiful enough and doesn't need to be faked.

30 second exposure during an aurora in Senja, Jan 21 2025.

How do #videos do here? I shoot a lot of #timelapse in Tasmania’s wilderness, especially #astrophotography.

On this night in the highlands documenting the #aurora, I became swamped by thick fog. The scintillating light through the branches was overwhelming to behold.

These #trees are some of the rarest on earth – they’re found only in a few dozen hectares. There’s only a few hundred living specimens left – Eucalyptus gunnii subsp. divaricata, better known as the Miena cider gum.

Another in-camera timelapse, but a different style for me. Instead of rapid shutter, this used 30sec exposures across an hour of the night. Finishes with a fishing boat zooming through the scene!

January 21. 7pm. Possibly the best hour of Nordlys on our entire Aurora Chase.

Just finished dinner and noticed a wiggle on the stackplot, so stepped outside to enjoy the slow burn of an aurora arc to the north. It started to build, get more elaborate and complex, and then it erupted.

Have never seen an aurora move so fast and wide. Just an exceptional moment.

Brief moments with nature at it's wildest. Sometimes that's a snow storm, sometimes an aurora storm.

Gotta be ready for anything in the north.

Some from the last few days. The first one, the red/purple arc visible in the sky is known as a SAR. It is not part of the true Aurora but is a rare thermal phenomenon seen when Aurora activity is present. Other notable mentions in this picture, from bottom left to centre top, are Sirius, Orion, Jupiter and the Pleiades. The other two are more Aurora shots from previous nights. It is always interesting to see the different colours that the Aurora can produce #Aberdeenshire #Scotland #SAR #Aurora

Some stunning images in this collection. (The headline is misleading - a lot of the pictures are from the southern hemisphere!)

Once in a lifetime photo.

Towards the end of a fabulous auroral display, a meteor streaked through my shot.
I was literally dancing with joy!

A strong auroral display beginning to break up, creating a swirling mass of green loops and spikes in the lower two-thirds of the shot. Above them, the stars are visible, in particular Ursa Major the Plough (Big Dipper) in the top left. The foreground is a silhouette of gentle hills, some trees are visible on the skyline which give scale. Near the centre of the shot, travelling from upper right to lower left, a sputtering fireball is streaking through.

If you have a clear, dark sky, and are at a high enough latitude, the aurora alerts have just started pinging... 😉
