"Nothing of Earth shows
tonight but the tips of the forest
against a bright white moon
almost full, half risen.

When our forebears saw something like this
they must have wondered how light,
such light, could exist in such darkness.
As for us, we know. And our knowledge

tells how the sun whirls us round,
how the planet’s exploded side
was rounded off, like this globe
itself, by the rush of gravity.

We ourselves seem
to be moving. And we are, we are."
