Careless People is a complicated book: the author is complicit in the activities she describes, which no amount of ironic detachment or claims of trying to change the system from the inside can hide. #bookstodon

"Rayner has a unique and interesting voice, and while the characters and the events are sometimes drawn from beyond this world, they are also believable within the frame of the stories."

A while ago I did a survey about epics. I asked people which epics they were most familiar with, and which ones they heard of, or studied in school.

More than 200 people filled out the survey, and I just posted a blog post about the most interesting or unexpected results.

Read here:

My first two reads for #TransRightsReadathon! One fiction and one nonfic (I always read different books at different times of the day).

Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas is the first YA book I have decided to read in AGES. The world and the concept sounded very cool.

Our Lives, Our Words is a collection of life stories from aravani (hijra) women from Tamil Nadu, compiled by one of them. It is touching read.

Since I can't resist a reading challenge, and Hungary is being horrific about queer rights right now, I decided to participate in the #TransRightsReadathon. I have nonfiction books on my TBR already, but I welcome recommendations for other genres 😊 Following the hashtag too!

How many deaths to end a war? ‘Eyes Turned Skywards’ is a fast-paced thriller set mainly in northern Scotland during World War Two. It uses many real settings, transported eight decades back in time.

The book’s central character uses a Hawker Hurricane as his personal transport as he pursues his investigations in Oban and Caithness. This Hurricane was seen some years ago at an airshow at what was then RAF Leuchars.

Find out more on my website:

This modern image shows a Hawker Hurricane fighter painted in grey and green camouflage parked on concrete and seen from the rear. The tail fills much of the centre of the frame and the wings extend out of the sides. Two of the propellor blades can be seen beyond the fuselage. In the background are other parked aircraft and then parts of two large green hangars. The scene is in sunlight. The front cover of ‘Eyes Turned Skywards’ is shown in the top right corner.

This has just popped up on my timeline elsewhere. I don't know when it dates from, but as knife crime is still a massive issue here, it seemed worth posting.
Akala is always worth listening to in any case.
Read his book Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire, if you haven't already.

A great perspective! Old books often contain timeless wisdom, unique perspectives & ideas that can inspire new thoughts &creativity.
It seems to me that all too many imitates & copies what others do these days. Few seem to have an interest in being unique.

As we're watching the people of Turkiye take to the streets to fight for their rights tonight - something we're all going to have to do soon - I'm going to recommend this as essential reading, by Turkish author Ece Temelkuran.

In advance of the April #AtoZChallenge I wrote another blog post. This one is about the epics that have women heroes, but I won't include them in the series in April.

To read the list, and the reasons why, visit the blog:

(And if anyone has any suggestions for getting translations for some of these, that would be great 😉 )

Abandoning books: What percentage of a book do you read before deciding it's not for you and moving on to something else?

I recently finished reading "Woman on the Edge of Time", written by Marge Piercy in 1976. It's a feminist utopia describing an anarchist world with many good ideas for anarchist societies. I'll add some quotes below to illustrate. This timeline in the future is contrasted with the harsh reality of a poor women of color in the 1970s in the US.

LeGuin: The Word for World is Forest, Stefan Heym: Schwarzenberg, Leaf\Lawson: Ferdinand, Norbert Bobbio: Rechts und Links, Arne Semsrott: Machtübernahme, Magdalena Sorger: Ameisen, Hannah Arendt: Menschen in finsteren Zeiten, Cory Doctorow: Little Brother (Aufstand), Mely Kiyak: Werden sie uns mit FlixBus deportieren?

Reading a lot of post-apocalytptic frankly closer to utopian than dystopian novels for my own edification (post-nation state, consensus democratic syndical networks, sustainability emphasis, eco-harmonious living, indigenous centered) and yeah.

I find more hope & meaning in reading the potential lives we could lead along with resisting real life fascism, capitalism, & the current oligarchal world order than I ever did/do participating in *gestures at whatever this mainstream shitshow is*.

Hopeful post-apocalyptic takes:
🔸️Silo 49 Quadrilogy by Ann Christy - an optimistic take set in the Silo universe w Silo author Hugh Howey's consent
🔸️Bunker Quadrilogy by Jordan Rivet
🔸️Koli Ramparts Trilogy by MR Carey

All contain a component of terrible suffering & collapse of the world order as well as an exploration of the entire range of possible organizations of our societies & economies. Including optimistic imaginative takes on how we *could* live.

Ursula Le Guin or whomever was right about capitalism's first or most important victims being our own imaginations of how things could be done differently.

Hey hey #AUDIOBOOKS folks, do you have a favorite free iOS app? Or one where you pay once and then you own it?

I'm looking for an app that will read my files, and do bookmarks. There is BookPlayer, which is lovely and I am paying for that currently, but I'm just curious if a free option exists?

(I'm happy paying the BookPlayer fellow I'm just wondering about other options for folks I'm trying to get off Audible, so you don't need to remind me to support people)

"The risk of overreaction is trivial compared to the risks of accommodation.”

As an aside, the above is part of a quote by Mark Greif I've extracted from the article. He wrote a brilliant book of essays a few years ago called Against Everything: On Dishonest Times, which I'd urge you to read.
