I love Jeanette Winterson's work - I have read many of her books, although I must admit not in recent years. This is an interesting insight into her early career.

I really like this explanation of the changes @niemanlab's editor made in her news intake: cut out "reactions", shift to finite information flows (print but also online news before it is amplified). And RSS, of course:

"I’m rebuilding my RSS reader so at least I have to scan the headlines myself."

[DW: I would not support any Substack b/c they platform Nazis. I also avoid video & audio. I don't need the hype]

It has been made clear that Google wants to kill independent publishers. If there are sites you love and they have a Patreon or the like you'd better support them before they disappear forever.

When I was putting together my "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" manuscript, I was constantly told that it is not a sellable concept for a book - because "people want to read their favorite myths", and not unkown ones.

Now the reviews are trickling in, and every reviewer highlights how exciting it is to find unknown myths about the well-known gods and heroes.

🤷‍♀️

(Still looking for an English language publisher, btw.)

By the way, said "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" book is looking for an English lanuage publisher ;)

It is coming out in Hungary on the 16th from Trend Kiadó.

It contains 25 little known stories from Greek and Roman mythology - including variants of myths not included in most popular collections. Sourced and researched, and re-told by a storyteller.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know :)

The cover of the book. Translation: Zalka Csenge Virág: The Mute Goddess: Forgotten Greek and Roman myths. The cover is designed in shades of blue, and portrays the stylized image of a goddess with long, flowing hair, surrounded by constellations and catching stars in her palm. Cover art by Khor Fruzsina.

Going through permission requests for my upcoming folktale collection. I'd just like to note that publishing permission for the average folktale costs somewhere between $250-400

Folktales are expensive y'all

I did up a book list for Booklisti. This is my list of five great Canadian books you're probably not aware of. Well, except for my father's... you've probably seen me go on about it a bit. Think about taking a chance on some of these: https://booklisti.com/booklist/great-books-canadians-you-probably-havent-heard-of-joe-mahoney/lxpdbjq

In today's edition of Assorted Nonsense: The Writer's Job, Adventures in Management, Review of Cherry Whip, the distributor Small Press United, and more. Well, not much more. But that's enough, surely?

I needed a journal article for research, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Not through libraries, not from the publisher. In the end I emailed the author, a little hesitantly. He sent me the article in 15 minutes.

Academic publishing being the mess it is, never discount the power of asking the author directly.
