Today in Labor History March 24, 1919: Poet and activist Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born. Ferlinghetti is most well-known for his book of poetry, “A Coney Island of the Mind” (1958) and for cofounding City Lights bookstore and publishing, in San Francisco. The authorities arrested him for publishing Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” because they deemed it obscene. However, a jury acquitted him in 1957. Politically, Ferlinghetti considered himself an anarchist. His politics were influenced by Anarchist poet and IWW member Kenneth Rexroth.

By a series of fortunate events, I came across this book at the library: "Killed Cartoons: Casualties of the war on free expression". This was written in 2007 and is a nice little time capsule of the environment at that time, which some people seem to misremember as a golden age when comedians could tell any joke without repercussions worse than a few groans and politicians never put any pressure on publications. So, if you want to remember, check out this book:

Publisher Mediahuis has sued X for scam advertisements.

According to the complaint, advertisements on X contained links to fictitious articles that included the logo of the Irish Independent and the byline of one of its journalists.

The publisher said that the scam advertisements were published and promoted on the platform and shared by ''verified'' users carrying a blue check.

Ich würde gerne von meinem Buch eine e-Version rausbringen. Habt Ihr Tipps und Empfehlungen? Vor allem auch außerhalb der üblichen amerikanischen Großkonzerne? Gibt es überhaupt Alternativen? 🤔

#Blogs #Publishing #Blogspot I would really like to create a little place in the #fediverse to which I could upload my #photography without mb / or number limits . There might be a little bit of politics in the mix as well, you never can tell!

TorrentFreak: Publishers Ramp Up Pressure vs. Anna’s Archive, Sci-Hub, Z-Library & Libgen. “The world’s major publishers claim that unlicensed libraries cast a permanent shadow over authors’ ability to make a living from their work. In common with the movie and movie industry counterparts, site-blocking is one of the weapons of choice, albeit against well-prepared opponents.”

I don't really understand the controversy over the bid by #Tortoise media to buy The #Observer, and the threat of 48 hour strike by Guardian journos who oppose the bid.

I do know that Tortoise Media have produced some of the best podcasts & 'slow news' content around for a few years.

Anyway, here is their pitch.

Had my literary agent actually stipulate that for my projects, I wanted human editors, human audiobook narrators, human cover artists, or else I'd take my book elsewhere. Don't let #Publishing trick you into pretending they hate AI or are against AI because they love #AI and so, you need to be extra firm on this and yes, they are fighting us every step of the way.

I love Jeanette Winterson's work - I have read many of her books, although I must admit not in recent years. This is an interesting insight into her early career.

It has been made clear that Google wants to kill independent publishers. If there are sites you love and they have a Patreon or the like you'd better support them before they disappear forever.

When I was putting together my "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" manuscript, I was constantly told that it is not a sellable concept for a book - because "people want to read their favorite myths", and not unkown ones.

Now the reviews are trickling in, and every reviewer highlights how exciting it is to find unknown myths about the well-known gods and heroes.

🤷‍♀️

(Still looking for an English language publisher, btw.)

By the way, said "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" book is looking for an English lanuage publisher ;)

It is coming out in Hungary on the 16th from Trend Kiadó.

It contains 25 little known stories from Greek and Roman mythology - including variants of myths not included in most popular collections. Sourced and researched, and re-told by a storyteller.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know :)

The cover is designed in shades of blue, and portrays the stylized image of a goddess with long, flowing hair, surrounded by constellations and catching stars in her palm. Going through permission requests for my upcoming folktale collection. I'd just like to note that publishing permission for the average folktale costs somewhere between $250-400
