As I break out my 1990s scented letter writing paper and marvel at its still strong scent, I find myself wondering:

Does anyone out there know anything about the science behind scented stationery? ⚗️

Even better, do we know if it affects the long term preservation of the paper?

Boost for reach! :boost_ok:

Are photographic prints and film analogue?

Obviously they aren't digital, but a strict definition of analogue is "encoded by a continuous signal that corresponds to some value of interest". Like, magnetic videotape is very obviously encoded. Vinyl records, the groove is an analogue for the frequency/amplitude of the sound.

There's no need to decode a photograph. It's apparent to your eyes in the same way that the original image is.

Is that analogue? If not, what is it?

NiemanLab: Journalists fight digital decay. “Decades of photojournalism, often captured under the most challenging conditions, are at risk of being lost to time. "Flickr is a living social media environment, with up to 25 million images uploaded each day. The reality of the company’s being acquired by a number of different parent companies over the course of its 20-year lifetime...additionally brings to the forefront a stark case for working to ensure the availability of its contents into the long future."
