I'm re-reading 1984 and it feels very relevant to now. Orwell's #book isn't really #scifi, it's really a book about oppression and propaganda.

I'll do a blog on it I think. There are things to say about it.

There are socialists who say Orwell wasn't really a socialist, and they are probably right, but what Orwell gets so very right is how censorship works. By removing references to better things, people have no means to criticise current things. You can't say the current government is bad if you have no proof things were ever better.

As Orwell says: Who controls the past controls the future.

Der mehrfach preisgekrönte Erzähler Christian Brückner (u.a. Robert de Niros Synchronstimme) liest Orwells Sci-Fi-Klassiker in vier Folgen.

To all you #SciFi #writers out there,

Please please please please have an astrophysicist or aerospace engineer review your book before publishing.

I'm reading an award-winning scifi book right now and while the writing is good and the author obviously tried to get the science details down, they also obviously didn't do much more than read wikipedia. It's getting painful to read.

VERY LATE, but here we are. The third journal post is UP.

https://samerion.com/journal/2025-01

Last year, Samerion has finally seen the long awaited changes to its design. Today, I discuss its history, elaborating on past designs, and explain elements that make up the current day look of the website.

Fresh on my #blog. #BookReview — Ascension by Nicholas Binge
Some books allow you to be enveloped in them like a cuddle from a doughy grandmother. Others scream in your face obnoxiously like the shift manager at a McDonald's on a bank holiday weekend. This book is the latter.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 208.

Becky Chambers 2nd Monk & Robot novella, A Prayer for the Crown-Shy (2022) is every bit as charming & philosophically rich as the first (micro-review 186). Together they tell the tale of the growing relationship between a wondering tea-monk & a robot emissary seeking to understand the world of humans. Asking fascinating questions about what sentience is but also a story of friendship, I cannot recommend the pair enough!

"Writing sf about this stuff isn't predictive, but I like to think that it constitutes an effective rebuttal to the people who say that taking digital rights seriously is itself unserious. Given that, I got to thinking about "Petard," and how much I liked that little story from 2014.

So I've decided to serialize it, in four parts, starting today. If you're impatient to get the whole story, you can listen to my podcast of it, which I started in 2014, then stopped podcasting for four years (!) before finishing in 2018:"

This week I've mainly been reading, no. 207.

Lavanya Lakshminarayan's dystopian SciFi novel The Ten Percent Thief (2023) is set in a future aversion of Bangalore, now Apex, where society has been stratified by algorithms. Told in a series of vignettes, the mosaic structure reveals the working of the new society & the strategy of the political resistance. Its a great read & once you get used the structure a highly convincing if frightening version of the future.

Jordan's least fav appearance of #Ursa in #PopCulture was this creature from the movie After Earth...

#introduction Hi, looking forward to hanging out here, myself I spend my time playing #acousticguitar doing covers mainly, growing #veg at home and down the #allotment ; #repair broken things although I have been known to blow them up when things go wrong!. Designing and building in wood when I get the urge (furniture, cajon drum most recently) reading all sorts of #books, particularly #scifi and #historicalfiction and enjoy #boardgames with friends, plus plenty of #running #yoga #strengthtraining

Folks it is an hour until #MONSTERDON the weekly monster movie watch party! Soon a horde of nerds will comment on a cheesy film we all watch together, consuming your timeline in a hedonistic frenzy! If you'd like to avoid that, consider muting the tag.

If you'd like to join in, this week's film is BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980), a Roger Corman classic. It's available on a variety of free streaming services, or on Archive.org: https://archive.org/details/battle-beyond-the-stars-1980

Been a while since I pimped my latest. Somehow I missed this fun 5-star review on Amazon:

"Alpha Max is funny... the kind of funny that has you thinking while your laughing. If that's your bag, Mark is your guy. He writes such round characters in well built worlds that end up in hilarious absurd situations. I love how he takes the absolute most unlikely heroes and ignites them into action!" –D. Brown

It was uplifting to read this interview with Alice Wong. Despite her lifelong disability, she's an activist with a strong voice. I share her philosophy derived from SciFi that "These kinds of imaginings of the future give me hope and the idea of infinite possibilities."

"Joy is not a word that naturally rhymes with communism, at least the Soviet variety. But pleasure is central to Star Trek‘s version of communism, which rejects the notion that escaping the logic of accumulation requires individuals to submit to a collective. Star Trek‘s writers make this point brilliantly by contrasting the Federation, made up of creative individuals who are free to choose their projects and partners, with the Borg — a dystopian cyborg collective made up of drones linked together in a beehive-like social order that expands by assimilating every species it encounters.

Star Trek rejects collectivism while still avoiding lazy critiques. We are treated to the traumatic reintroduction of a Borg drone to humanity, who experiences debilitating withdrawal symptoms, missing desperately the collective’s voice in her head. It is a reminder of how authoritarianism can be dangerously attractive to the lonely, but also of how important it is to pay the price of personhood.

But Star Trek does not just offer a vision of a splendid future. Like any other practical manifesto, it offers a theory of change: of social evolution founded on solid historical materialist tenets."

I watched Krull many moons ago, in a time much different to this one, in a world long forgotten.

It looks a bit crappy.

Fantasy, SciFi readers:

My fam has a monthly book club, it's my turn to pick a book. Looking for suggestions.

Must be < 500 pages. And a GREAT read. A recent book (last few years) is best, less chance someone has read it.

This month, we are reading "Iron Widow". Fantastic book.

Any recommendations? Please and thank you!

My BookWyrm 2024!

Funniest book: It's a tie between The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff and Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland. The first is hella feminist and is set in contemporary north India. The latter is hella queer and is set in a fantasy version of the Caribbean (gay pirates!)

Best scifi adventure: Echo of Worlds by M. R. Carey

Best thought-provoking scifi: Julia by Sandra Newman

(Scifi is my main genre so I have to divide it up)

Best non-fiction: The Balfour Declaration by Jonathan Schneer. It has the best writing imo. Closely followed by Late Victorian Holocausts by Mike Davis.

All of these books are good; if I don't like a book then I usually don't finish it and am even less likely to review it.

My bookwyrm handle is just @SallyStrange@bookwyrm.social! I will probably be posting about even more books in 2025, as I've now really gotten into the habit of using Bookwyrm.

Now up through S1E10 of Stargate SG-1 on my 1st watch through the series ever. Three episodes in a row have been good. I think they've hit their stride. Yeah you have to grade on a curve for 1990s TV budgets, effects, story quality, etc. but I'm still enjoying it #scifi #stargate #StargateSG1

I've got extra stock!

These hopeful climate fiction stories would make great holiday gifts, esp for folks who are struggling with the dark times ahead.

I'm selling them at cost ($10 incl shipping, US ONLY), while supplies last. I'd love for them to be affordable heart-warming gifts for folks you care about (or maybe for YOU). 🌞 📖

Second impressions: This is supposedly faithful to the book yet has loads of changes including the wrong characters doing things.

The thing about the #Dune #books is that they aren't really about #scifi technology, yet this adaptation begins and it's all about technology.

I suppose they're trying to appeal to scifi fans, but in my opinion it's unnecessary to focus on technology.

Also Jessica is rubbish in this.
