Ngwi Ndem, an 82cm Cameroonian sculpture known by Europeans as the Bangwa Queen, was supposedly given or sold by Chief Fontem Asonganyi in the 1890s to Gustav Conrau, a German trader and colonial agent. It changed hands several times before being purchased by the Dapper Foundation in Paris in 1999 for $3.8M. Since 2017, Chief Charles Taku, a great grandson of Asonganyi and lead counsel at the International Criminal Court, says that Ngwi Ndem was stolen, and he wants it back. @thecontinent reports on the case as part of its Museum of Stolen History series.

Photo d’une petite sculpture en bois inspirée de masques traditionnels du Vanuatu. Il s’agit d’un visage souriant,avec des jambes qui partent directement des côtés de la base. Il n’y a pas de buste, pas de bras, et les cuisses sont à peine esquissées. Les genoux sont rentrés vers l’intérieur, légerement pliés. Il n’y a pas de pieds, les jambes finissent fondues dans le socle. Le visage est très grand, souriant. La bouche et les yeux sont évidés. Le nez et les sourcils sont proéminents. Un genre de couronne qui pourrait être une coiffe, des cheveux et une barbe entoure tout le masque, du sommet de la tête au menton. La lumière est assez tamisée et vient d’en bas à gauche, elle accentue les détails de la sculpture. Au mur, au dessus et à droite de la sculpture, on voit un morceau d’un collier polynésien en coquillages. Il ressemble à un gros médaillon.

A random sculpture hidden between two benches in the centre of Dundee.

There are lots of random small sculptures to be found in the city centre. They are part of a public art project called Lost and Found by Jeremy Cunningham. There is no sculpture trail map for this and they are not all obvious, all the times I have sat on these benches, and today was the first time I noticed this!

Detailing the recent exhibition at the Hepworth, Wakefield,
Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski, and others, survey, Ronald Moody: Sculpting Life (2024) is the first book to explore the work & career of this Caribbean (UK based) sculptor. Its a fascinating introduction to a major but often ignored figure, which doesn't shy away from the racism of the art world. Really well illustrated, this is a revalatory & vital publication.
