Rather a sad picture for #ThickTrunkTuesday but just shows the strength of the winter storms. On my walk last Friday I saw many fallen trees in the upland valleys - it looked like the winds had been funnelled. Most lifted at the roots but this one (oak?) was shattered. Maybe it already had a weakness, I don’t know.
Photo of a large tree (possibly oak) that has been brought down by storms. It lies shattered in a field, the mossy trunk splintered. In the background is a conifer plantation on a hillside. A whole swathe of trees flattened like matchsticks. In front of the plantation is a small river lined with broadleaf trees, some of these have also been downed or have lost branches. The sky is blue with white clouds.

I went for a spring bike ride in the Grizedale Forest yesterday, and had the place nearly to myself.

I've not posted any of my Australian pictures for a while, so here is one.

At the end of this trail, through this woody tunnel, at the brow of this hill is a magnificent panorama of the ocean - which I will leave you to imagine for yourselves...

A beautiful moss covered Western red #cedar #tree - still unprotected.
Only a human, with a compromised & unwell soul, would be OK killing an elder tree this magnificent. Some things are just plain wrong.

These ancient old growth trees are essential to fighting accelerated #ClimateChange. #OldGrowth ecosystems in our coastal temperate rainforests supports much biodiverse lifeforms. The naturally moist environment helps to lower impacts of wildfires & other natural disasters that have increased as our governments continue to fund & enable more ecocidal projects.

Low-angle, wide shot of a tree trunk positioned vertically. The bark is reddish-brown, deeply textured with vertical grooves, and heavily populated with green moss. The composition emphasizes the tree's height and scale, creating a sense of upward momentum. Framing trees surround the main subject, with a diffused, white sky in the background.

#SelfPortrait with ancient elder yellow #cedar #tree. I have a longtime deep connection with #OldGrowth #forests & have spent decades of activism work to try to save & protect them from ecocidal monsters.

How we think about nature, how we treat wild living ecosystems, speaks volumes on our personal character. If we become too disconnected from wild nature, we will turn into demons who destroy our natural life forces.

Wide-angle shot of a me, positioned at the base of a colossal cedar tree in a dense forest. The composition emphasizes scale, contrasting my small size with the immense tree. Bark texture is detailed, with surrounding trees providing a vertical backdrop reaching towards a light sky. The lighting accentuates the depth & texture of the forest.

An old entity has been preserved in the courtyard of the historical home site surrounding it. It has seen five flags fly over it as civilized nations fought each other, even burned the city, to colonize the area.

A large tree trunk with vertically lined gray-brown bark. Three large limbs split off at about six feet (two meters). At the bough ends visible there are patches of small green leaves. In the background is a wrought iron gate and, in the distance, an old residential building.
The end of several limbs from the same old tree as previous photo, growing top right to lower left, view looking up into the rich blue sky from underneath. Limbs are gnarled and angular, ending in tufts of small green leaves. There is Spanish moss and ferns growing on the limbs. One limb blocks the sun. On the lower left are the backs of historical buildings, one three stories tall and pink. It has two slim vertical windows on the top floor and a door and similar window on the first floor. There is a section visible of a breezeway made of stone arches. A banana plant grows nearby. There is an arched gate to the right of the pink building. The other building partially visible are white with dark roofs.

Almost forgot, I met this wonderful gnarly oak tree yesterday. Amazingly it had survived the storms - looks like it has survived a few!

Photo of an old and twisted oak tree on high moorland, the hills around brown with dead bracken. The branches are bare apart from a few brown and curled leaves that hang stubbornly on knobbly twigs. The stout, gnarly trunk is thickly upholstered in green moss. Ferns sprout from the sides. It looks very human-like. It made me happy to see it surviving on the wily windy moor. Many trees around felled by winter storms.
The ruins of a stone building lie behind, mossy stones being enveloped by bracken.

The "Seven Chiefs" plane tree on Margaret Island, Budapest. Almost 200 years old, it was injured during the siege in WWII and regrew with 6 trunks (one of which branched in two later).

'#Trees have no legal status’: calls rise for stronger protection in #UK against felling

"In Norse mythology, it is Yggdrasil, the world tree, with its branches in the heavens & its roots in the underworld, which underpins the very existence of all creation. When it dies, the myths tell us, the world dies with it."

The beautiful & rare, open grown ‘Summergill Brook Ash’, that probably was a part of an ancient Ash Silvopasture, sitting near the Wales - England boarder, 300 - 400 years old, without ash dieback! It would of witness ‘The Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the British Civil Wars’. It stands strong, with a slightly more decayed Ancient Ash neighbour downstream, holding the oxbow together. 6.96m in girth an Ancient Tree. Black and white image.
