The upper storey has five rectangular windows, the outside four with closed brown wooden shutters, and the central one with one shutter open, revealing the warm glow of a lamp inside the room. The building has sand-coloured plaster at the top, which has fallen away below to reveal dusky red brick work which gets deeper in colour the further down the wall you go. The water in front is an intense bottle-green colour, and there are two pale blue-grey wooden mooring posts either side of the boarded-up doorway. All the colours in the picture are quite muted and cold, apart from the orangey light from the half-open window.

The bottom right quadrant of the frame, someone has drawn a bobbly-topped cloud-like shape in thick rust-brown paint on the wall, which disappears into the flaking brickwork at the bottom. In the very centre of the frame, a long word has at some point been graffitied, but it has faded at the edges and much of the plaster crumbled away, so all that can clearly be seen are three capital letters spelling "art".

Colour photo of a wide canal on a very foggy afternoon. The lower third of the image is lightly rippled steel blue water, and the upper two thirds dense grey-white fog. On the very right of the frame a small motorboat heading away from the photographer, and on the left some low rise white-grey buildings with the white-grey dome of a basilica rising behind them just on the edge of visible through the fog. If you were to zoom in and squint a bit, you can just make out the low skyline of St Mark's Square in the distance, but at first glance it just looks like slightly darker denser fog. The colour palette of the image is dull and muted and the light is entirely flat, apart from four bright streetlights, close together and glowing yellow-white like the heads of four lit matches, in front of the buildings on the far left. The whole image feels muted and quite sombre, verging on bleak.
