Fascinating world of ancient #glass: A #Roman glass model of a #boat, dating 2nd c. AD. It was found in St. Aldegund in a 4th-century woman's grave. Six of such boats are known. We don't know their function: Were they used as women's urinals, as components of water clocks and sundials, as drinking cups?

A translucent blue glass vessel shaped like a boat, with a curved hull, upturned ends, and small protruding feet for support. The surface has visible cracks. A soft shadow is cast beneath the object on a neutral background.

That time I went kayaking in the Atlantic Ocean. When I went out east in 2015, I hauled my kayak with me. This was the first time kayaking in salt water. The buoyancy difference from fresh to saltwater is amazing! I felt a hundred pounds lighter! This is off the coast of Maine. For awhile it looked like the sailboat was going to run into the lighthouse, but it went behind the lighthouse island.

A color landscape photo from a kayak in the ocean. The nose of a yellow kayak points forward from the lower left side of the frame. The ocean and sky are blue and there's wispy clouds in the sky. The ocean is pretty flat. A two masted white sailboat in the distance is moving from center right toward the left. At center left a point of land sticks out to almost center frame. It's actually part of an island. On the point is a lighthouse with a white base and black upper part where the light is. A small square building with a red roof is next to the lighthouse on its left. Further left is a large two story building painted white with a red roof. A few conifer trees are visible on the island.

Our very first visit to Norway found us in Bergen on a day that started off rainy but did brighten up as the day wore on. We had no plans during our 2013 visit other than to walk around and see what caught our eyes, and ended up buying jewellery, some more typical souvenirs, and having a beer outside somewhere. Not great beer, but nice to try the local stuff anyway.

An overcast day with drizzly rain and the people we can see are mostly wearing raincoats with some holding umbrellas. We're in a city and standing next to a dock that stretches through it. Buildings are set well back from us on the right and across the flat, grey water on the left more buildings on the other side of the harbour area can be seen. Tied up alongside in front of us is a modern sailing boat created in the style of a Viking longboat with very high, curved prow and aft and a single mast in the centre. The boat is warmly-coloured wood with a little green, red, and yellow accent colouring on its hull. It feels cold and damp.
