The "True Size" site is a fascinating way of comparing the actual size of countries. Here's Australia, superimposed on Europe - showing Cairns to Perth is similar to the distance from Moscow to Madrid.

I did it once with a tracing, over a map in the Atlas. I made sure the scale/dimension was the same. Every time anyone talks about cycling, or EVs, they should do the same. A trip from Brisbane to Cairns, is like travelling from Monaco to Oslo. Not only are we the largest Island, we are also the smallest 'continent'.
I use it when I try to explain to British people how wide open the West & Midwest of the US is

Here's my state of Wisconsin...all 5 million of us (and 3 million of those are tucked into the SE corner)

My uncle has a story about meeting a British couple in Perth who said they were planning on driving to Melbourne for the weekend. He had to explain to them why that wasn't going to work.
This is so fabulous! The distances we travel in spread out countries can be such a foreign concept to many. It reminds me of a road trip I made from Winnipeg Manitoba to Red Deer Alberta, where part of the map’s instructions were “Go straight for 1200 kms, then turn right”.
It always blows my mind that NSW is roughly the same size as France, yet is far from Australia's largest state.
