When I started here, there were still tools to find people from other sites who had moved here, but those have mostly been blocked (by the other platforms).

My way of finding people to follow is to post a lot and see who follows me, probably not the best way 😉
It is also good to try following a few #tags and see who is posting on those.

I saw some people trying to compile "Starter Packs" for different fields. I thought that was @FediTips but my memory is a bit vague.

Also, I did follow some big accounts who post a lot for a while. If anybody made interesting comments, I checked out their profile and followed them if I liked it. I still do this, but have muted some of the heavy posters when my feed got overwhelmed by their content or boosts.

I have another account called @FediFollows which posts lists of follows on particular topics, and has a website at https://fedi.directory with them organised into categories.
