#Palestine Eight Israeli Security Forces members among nine Arrested for August kidnapping and brutal assault of a Palestinian man

Nine suspects, including eight IDF soldiers and Border Police officers, have been arrested for the violent kidnapping and assault of Layth Awaina, a Palestinian from the Bethlehem area, at Al-Auja stream in the Jordan Valley last August.

The masked attackers, who arrived in a Border Police vehicle and accused their victims of being #Hamas members, handcuffed Awaina, beat him with a tree branch and M16 rifle, threw him into a stream, and abandoned him kilometers away, resulting in his hospitalization with severe injuries including facial fractures and broken teeth.

The suspects, including three Border Police volunteers and a suspended YASAM officer, were arrested following an investigation by military and police authorities, despite initial denials by the IDF and Border Police of any involvement when Haaretz first reported the incident.

Two of the suspects are also implicated in the theft of police special forces weapons during October 7, highlighting a pattern of alleged criminal behavior among security personnel.

#Ynet is adding that Saar Ophir, who was previously investigated for allegedly killing a Nukhba militant on October 7, has been arrested again, this time for the kidnapping . The investigation, led by the Department of Police Investigations (Machash), was conducted secretly in recent weeks and moved to its public phase today (Tuesday).

[followup] Hebrew University's Double Standard: Swift to Suspend Palestinian Professor, Silent on Jewish Lecturer Suspected of Violence

While the Hebrew University quickly suspended Palestinian Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian for statements about #Gaza in a podcast, it has remained silent about Michael Wolfovitz, a faculty member arrested on suspicion of violently attacking a Palestinian youth in the West Bank.

Sapir Slutzker-Amran, a human rights lawyer, co-director of the "Breaking Walls" movement, and a doctoral candidate in law., notes this disparity is particularly striking given that Wolfovitz, who researches settler violence and opposed sanctions against violent settlers, was among those who demanded action against Shalhoub-Kevorkian.

Despite the university's ability to suspend faculty before indictment, it has taken no action against Wolfovitz, highlighting what the author sees as institutional bias in handling cases involving Palestinian versus Jewish faculty members.

Note: Wolfovitz was subsequently suspended following public pressure and criticism.
