So, unfollow or block me if you will, but this is so true! #Pleather is #Microplastic pollution! Yes, #Leather is made from skin of animals, but IT LASTS! And it doesn't cause microplastic pollution! And it can be tanned sustainably (I've done it with acorns). If animals are going to be killed (and yes, whether for meat or old age, animals will die) -- it's better to utilize them fully rather than use #Plastics!

Ayoo just to preempt the inevitable dumb takes we're about to start seeing;

I am PRO-WOOL
I am PRO-LEATHER

Fuck the idea of replacing durable, sustainable animal products with cheap, flimsy plastic that doesn’t bio-degrade. Agave nectar and other artificial sweeteners are expensive, labor-intensive, and destroy the environment to be farmed.

Do not buy into pernicious marketing campaigns pushed by dickhead organizations trying to stay relevant, like PETA.

My favorite winter coat is a genuine shearling vintage jacket that was made in the 1990s. One sheep died 30 years ago to make this jacket. How many ocean animals died of consuming too many micro plastics in the 30 years this jacket has remained functional?
Yep, yep, yep.

Last year, I had to retire a 70s leather coat (from the Sears Leather Shop!) that I thrifted ~2000 or so. Replaced it w/ an almost identical one (the zip-out liner is plaid flannel, zipper front instead of buttons, also Sears); I reckon it'll still be going strong when I'm dead & buried...

Aren't a whole lot of garments you can buy new anymore that'll hold up 25, 50 years...
I have used the same heavy winter coat since 1998. I wore it at a Seattle solidarity protest in DC on Nov 30, 1999. I wore it to J20/2001, J20/2005, and the war protests at Obama's second Inauguration. We stood down in 2009 at the request of the Black community as the first nonwhite President ever took office.

I then wore that same coat to the home demo at Mike Pence's house two days before J20, 2017 and had it on as I prepared to deploy for J20 itself before having to withdraw after discovering the Deploraball fracas had made me a fugitive.

It was on over my body armor at the huge Dec 12 2020 battle against the Proud Boys/Oath Keepers/3%ers in DC and during the defense of BLM Plaza on Jan 6, 2021. I still have it today.

While this coat IS made of probably synthetic cloth and filler, constant repairs have kept it in service through the decades.

It may have been made from oil but was only made from it ONCE, a quarter century ago.
It sounds like you lucked out with something well-made. Unfortunately, so much is fast fashion these days, and poorly made.
It was a gift from my mother
And a lot of folks don't bother mending. I'm one of the few.
Not repairing things is destructive and expensive. I have a lot of stuff here I made myself. In those cases a repair is usually much easier than starting over from raw materials.

I try to avoid owning nonrepairable things unless no alternatives exist.
Yah, my old coat gave up the ghost when it finally became impossible to keep mending it (I'd resewn the stitching around the underarms so many times, the seam allowances lost structural integrity and mending was no longer an option...)

Still, tho'! Not bad for a coat made in the 70s, and stood up to Seattle winters for at least 20+ years while I had it!
