With just six days to go until J20, what I am seeing is the kind of initial fight where each side circles the other, looking for an opening.
This reminds me of the "phoney war" at the start of WWII. France and Britain declared war on Nazi Germany after the invasion of Poland but nothing happened for months as each side awaited a chance to strike. Each side feared the other was ahead in the prewar arms race.
The British didn't know the first German Me-109 fighters had wooden props and 2/3ed their intended power, or that most of the early Panzers were training models with only machine guns. The Germans didn't realize how short of their advanced Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes the British were, and overrated the Maginot Line.
In fact, many thought a second war between Germany and France would instantly stalemate not all that far from the old WWI front lines, along the Maginot and Seigfried lines near the border.
Finally the Nazis jumped off first, invading France through the Ardennes with a combined Panzer/infantry attack relying on Stukas for close air support. They went through the forest and bypassed the Maginot line, something thought impossible for tanks.
Another comparison is to two fleets of opposing sailing warships, each trying to work their way upwind of the other (get the "weather gauge") before closing to 100 yards or so to open fire.
This may be why we are seeing relatively little energy going into the J20 protests. Yes, we are protesting but this is not where it starts unless we are attacked directly and immediately. There is some risk the Proud Boys or other MAGA fash will start shit in DC on Jan 19 at or after Trump's rally, but if they are smart they won't do anything that looks bad on TV until those pardons are in the bag, possibly the following day.
This could blow in a week, or stay a phony war for months. Please everyone, be ready for either possibility. Since we benefit from delay (more time to make ready), let's not start it ourselves. Maybe we get really lucky and the civil service (AKA "deep state") folks can snap a leash on Trump's collar before he bites us all and prevent civil war entirely. Maybe not, but lets not throw that possibility away.
