Isn't it poetic and ironic that out of all possible time lines we are in one where #securejoin #openpgp protocols on top of the existing #email protocols offer the arguably most solidly scaling, useable, world-wide federated end-to-end encrypted messaging reality, safe against compromised #mitm servers? Hundreds of billions spend to create "the email successor" and here we are in 2025 .... #interoperable #email and #cryptography as the tortoise looking at Achilles through the back mirror :)

talking about the future of email : is there any project of a thunderbird extension for delta chat ?
not that we know off. As far as we know thunderbirds current extension model does not allow even an #autocrypt compliant plugin let alone all the rest that delta offers. #enigmail used to offer full autocrypt support but when thunderbird changed the plugin model and integrated openpgp into thunderbird they went back to the old idea of "users have to consciously manage their encryption keys" ... An unfortunate old tradition. We aim for modern usable security like signal delivers.

Just one remark while I don't think Thunderbird needs a Delta Extension: I have tested Autocrypt between Delta and Thunderbird and it does work. It's why I so passionately advise against changing the mail address in-place in a Delta profile. 😬 https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/115.7.0/releasenotes/
ah, well, Autocrypt defines the UId as decorative https://docs.autocrypt.org/level1.html#id75 and enigmail impelemnted it that way at the time.

you mean, you advice is to used a classic e-mail address that works better with thunderbird ?
out general advise for testing out delta is to use a default chatmail profile and then when this is satisfying to configure another profile with an existing address and also see about interactions with existing other mail apps or webmail. Starting with such a mixed setup might lead to troubles before any fun even starts :)
that makes sense, and I have done that... even if i did not succeed with using it on the desktop app (with the qrcode thing..). Anyway, it seems as well a good idea to make it easy for users of thunderbird which are a massive group of users...
If you have a laptop and a phone, it usually helps to create a hotspot on a phone and connect laptop to the hotspot, then do a second device setup. This way you don't need to deal with your Wi-Fi router and connect devices directly.
Though I had absolutely no problems using Delta chat on my own mail server that certainly has no advanced chatmail functionality

maybe it's more that we recommend a dedicated chat profile but even mixed usage works for some people. It's just not for newcomers to suggest them first to use their existing big-corp email account. Chatmail servers forget, big corp ones track and train on things etc. own mail servers are a totally valid option and such folks usually employ the perseverance to figure things out nicely.
