Users of #Mastodon and the #fediverse, ensure you do not use the Bluesky bridge. Kiwifarms is pouring in on Bluesky using Jesse Singal as a Trojan horse and the company just handed them the golden ticket. I will not use the bridge myself, will not endanger my friends here

is there a way to block all bridged accounts? I’m here so I don’t have to interact with folks on commercial platforms…
You can do a server block of "bsky.brid.gy". You should be able to do that by going to this profile @jay.bsky.team on the native Mastodon site, clicking the 3-dot button and finding the block domain option.

I'm personally not blocking, I'll deal with bad actors as they come. Certainly not all of Bsky is "bad". But we all make our experience here what we want it to be. You are empowered to block if ya like and I support that!!

Happy tootin'

I bridged early on to #BlueSky and have some followers because of it. I will not deactivate that & throw them to the dogs w/o VERY good reason.

I don't know anything about this controversy. Please provide more substance, because I don't jump at every social media rumor without sources.

* Who is this person? Who is the other person? (I have read neither of their feeds.)

* Why should I be afraid of them and not simply avoid giving them oxygen and/or counter any misinformation with facts?

* Why should I abandon my BlueSky followers to unchallenged misinformation?

* Please provide links & sources.

I do believe there's a time for blocking, but I never do so pre-emptively or en masse, simply because of the rumor mill. I've seen too many good accounts (mine included) falsely accused & made the target of blocking campaigns on various social media platforms, due to nothing more than some random account posting, "You should all block these people."

#NoMoreBlockLists
Jesse Signal is extremely worthy of a block, and really shouldn’t get to be on any social site. He’s stirring up his followers on X to join Bluesky and harass trans users.

This is a pretty good summary:

https://little-flying-robots.ghost.io/bluesky-gets-enormous-butternut-squash-soup-and-vietnam-2/

(Includes a snippy little diss on Mastodon, which I don’t love, but otherwise good stuff imho.)
That indeed sounds like a good reason to block, but thee OP is advocating not to use the bridge - how does one connect to the other?
That is an excellent question into which I’m afraid I have no insight; I don’t understand how the bridge works. But given that Singal is working with Kiwifarms—arguably some of the worst people on the internet—and Bsky is apparently happy to let him maintain a presence on their platform despite that, I am in sympathy with anyone advocating to maintain a wall between 🦣 & 🦋, at least for now.

I think that’s a great answer. There are people now flooding BSky who want to harm trans people. My principle is one of prevention - as there is no cure once you’ve let them in. So adopting the precautionary principle rather than the ‘show me the harm then I will think about it’ seems ethical and simple.

I’ll block any on my timeline who are followed by bridged accounts
My experience in the long time I've been in the Fediverse is one of very positive and secure interactions. That is to say, that any hate speech I've run across has been VERY quickly dealt with, and I don’t see these monsters being allowed to stick around and "poison this well," so to speak, the way BlueSky is allowing them refuge.

I think you’re unnecessarily worried.

By you blocking "everyone who is followed by bridged accts," you're asking folks like me to go thru my many followers & check everyone following me, looking for any BS accounts, then somehow (for NO sins on their part) block them all.

I will not spend hours punishing the innocent, and throw out the wheat with the chaff.

#BlueSky is FAR too entwined with Mastodon now to realistically expect that of everyone. And you would need EVERYONE to do it, for it to work.

I'm sorry you've been hurt, but those millions of people were not the ones who hurt you. Don't condemn them.
"I think you’re unnecessarily worried."

Which is fine! We all have our own take on this.

I am really not! You don't have to do anything. Honestly... up to you.

I am telling you how I will proceed, I am not telling you how to.

I am urging my admin (@mas.to) to adopt this policy - and am hopeful, given his excellent moderation approach to date, he will.

I find the atittude of 'they aren't all bad so it's OK' unconvincing. If bad actors come in - as they have - on the back of the 'happy to associate with' people, then they definitely aren't all good either are they? Anyway. You do you.

I disagree. Which is fine. Acting now is the only way I can see to stop very bad things happening as they have all over social media when folks have not cared enough, early enough.

I have not been hurt. Nor condemning anyone. That's quite some jump. Bear's in woods and 1 poison M&M in the bowl are analogies

I am trying to stop people who's clear and explicit agenda is to hurt others (esp. #Trans people), from having a route to doing so, in one of the very few remaining public safer spaces. That's it

But again, that is not justification for cutting off an entire platform of millions of people. You're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

You forget how Federation works, and WHY Mastodon & the Fediverse work so well. Bad actors are not allowed to remain for long at all. If an instance does allow them to run amok, then that entire instance is defederated. Admins do not want to risk this with the instance they have built and paid for, so they kick those people off quickly.

We already have NeoNazis, etc, in the Fediverse. But you don't see their instances because those have been defederated.

Your instance and your admins will keep them at bay, without you needing to block the entire #BlueSky platform. Don't panic.

Have faith in federation.

This is not a billionaire's closed platform, unwilling to kick people off for hate speech because those haters sell ad space. This is the Fediverse. We're stronger than that.
Well - I disagree. I have been completely right about my distrust of BSky from day 1. My faith in federation is based on me actively not allowing federation with platforms which allow harm. This is active work, where some of us argue about others who want more leniency towards fascist adjacent platforms

If BSky users can see my posts on BSky, then BSky can monetise my posts. If I can see BSky users then harm will come thru to here

@Sadsquatch @imsodin @berniethewordsmith
If you personally are not bridged, then your posts and even your replies to bridged accounts cannot be seen by BlueSky users. Your entire account is invisible to them.

So I'm not throwing the bathwater out. I'm just not having a bath anywhere near the toxicity of that site.

"We're stronger than that"

Our strength comes from pre-emptively blocking commercial platforms from access.

And BTW - once this chat has done, I'm sorry but that's you too.

@Sadsquatch @imsodin @berniethewordsmith
Then please stop wasting my time arguing your erroneous and ill-informed position on the subject. I'm sorry you don't understand how the tech and federation work, and refuse to learn. Have a nice life.
Gotta be honest and say, based on some answers here, that I could very well be overthinking this. But honestly, Kiwifarms is no joke and they killed people before. I don't want to make changes with the lives of others. If nothing happens? Beautiful. Glad to retract my recommendation. For now, let's wait and see
If by ‘wait and see’ you mean ‘wait and see having already blocked any chance that Kiwifarms harms people on Mastodon’ I’m with you. The suggestion on this thread that more evidence of harm is needed before acting is.. well…something

@Sadsquatch @imsodin @AnneTheWriter1
Yep, that kind of wait and see
