UN agencies estimate that some 1.6 million people in Gaza are living in makeshift shelters that do not protect them from the cold of winter, with nearly half a million in flood-prone areas. Authorities in Gaza, meanwhile, say some 110,000 out of the 135,000 tents that people are sheltering in the Strip are worn out and not fit for use.

Palestinians are having to endure freezing temperatures.

Parents have been doing everything possible to shield their children, burning whatever they can find including wood, plastic sheets, and scraps of debris to give them some sort of heat.

The makeshift tents they are living in are no longer usable. They’ve been made from plastic sheeting or torn fabric that provides little protection against the biting cold.

“I got up in the morning and I touched my daughter and to my shock she had turned very blue and was solid like a piece of wood. I took my daughter to the hospital where they told me she died because of the very cold weather.”
