ProfDJ's killer cuts for your streaming shuffle, No.36

Al Green. Take me to the River

Al Green always worked at the borders of soul, gospel & the blues, and this great groove is a good (if lesser known) example of his sound. This has a lovely funky feel with great horns & a solid rhythm section driving it forward.... and if it sounds familiar you may have heard Talking Heads, good if less supple cover version.

ProfDJ's killer cuts for your streaming shuffle, No.24

John Coltrane, Equinox

This classic (if lesser known) John Coltrane track is a great mix of (semi) avant-garde sax playing with a fabulous (latin-inspired) modal groove. Just relax into it and allow it take hold; it becomes quite mesmeric in its effect across its eight minutes. And if you're not sure you like jazz give this a play (right through) it might change your mind.

Bobby Bland. St. James Infirmary

While this is perhaps a little more melancholy than previous killer cuts, Bobby Bland's version of this blues classic is a masterclass in horn arrangement, which takes you right to the centre of a New Orleans funeral march. Along with his gravelly voice, this down tempo blues is a bit of melancholy magic.
