Breakaway car infrastructure
In the middle of the sidewalk
🤦

How, exactly, does the #trafficEngineers' thought process work here? What kind of world would it be if #transportation infrastructure stopped cars *before* they got on the sidewalk? Are we more afraid about hurting drivers inside their armored and padded box than they are of killing someone with their car?

This is not a freeway. There should be no "clear zone". Any driver wrecking at freeway speeds here deserves to die in a fire.
looking left, a breakaway sign post with flashing lights, smack in the middle of a sidewalk while the street has way more clear width than necessary for 20mph speeds
looking right, the sign "push button to turn on warnings lights" is in the foreground and a broken-off warning lights pole laying on the sidewalk behind it.

Lightly skimming Boulder's 2023 "#VisionZero Action Plan", I'm somewhat surprised that they would adopt something so toothless in 2023. This was like cities in 2015 would adopt a plan that said they really want to quit killing people with cars, and plan to achieve it with five things that won't work and seven they won't actually do, besides zero change to the terrible streetscapes #trafficEngineers regularly design.

😒 "Boulder Police Department is investigating 14 illegally placed signs with explicit traffic safety messages like “DON’T KILL ANY KIDS TODAY” and “SLOW THE F— DOWN.”

Imagine road authorities doing actual #VisionZero work, putting #StuffInTheStreet with the same urgency they show in response to DIY efforts.

Below it, a sign of the same size and font: "Don't kill any kids today".
