What is the Moon made of? And how did it get here?

Researchers from our Uni & @mpsgoettingen analysed samples from the Moon. Their results suggest that the Moon could in fact be a chunk ejected from the Earth’s mantel following a massive collision: https://s.gwdg.de/woj1iB

Image shows glass cabinets holding samples of rock from the moon. The cabinet shows that the samples are securely looked after and protected - it has a secure air and locking system and the samples can be handled through what looks like "portholes". The room behind is full of similar cabinets. The rocks themselves are dark grey some straight with cut surfaces and some with holes. Since the Apollo era, the lunar samples have been stored at NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston and are available for research. All lunar samples analysed in the laboratory in Göttingen were provided by NASA. Photo by Andreas Pack
