Of course the US can call it anmything they want. After all the UK generally refers to the watery gap between France and England as 'The English Channel', and the French 'la Manche'. Does anyone care about the ravings of a mad man and will any other country pay attention? Incidentally, it shows how far the Panama Canal is from the US as well.
